The problem? An AOL account once held by Gauthier's late father still showed billing charges accumulating against it. The account had been dormant for months; the credit card he used for it was inactive at least as long.

Nevertheless, AOL kept charging $25.90 each month for dial-up online access. Late fees for non-payment accumulated on the credit card, too.

Gauthier even offered to send a copy of her father's obituary as proof he truly was dead. AOL was unmoved.

"An AOL service guy told me to stop complaining and learn to use a computer," she said. "Then he hung up."

Yeah they are big scammers now. Once you get it into your system it's hard to get rid of them.

Cancel them, them forget to stop billing you. Then offer you FREE service for 2 months instead giving your money back. Anything to keep you coming.

My friend had to actually threaten them with a lawsuit to get it all to stop.

I think they recently did get sued for such things not too long ago.

Remember that recorded call where that one guy couldn't get his service disconnected? they wouldn't let him cancel, and he was on the phone for 30 minutes. It was a funny recording

Isn't it interesting how AOL is still clueless about why people flee them whenever they can...

my mom just got sent to collections over a AOL account that we CANCELED 4 years ago!!!

apparently the best/easiest way to cancel is to say you are going to jail for a long time, or you could say you are joining the military and will be stationed overseas... I hear those work well.

I personally would not try to cancel any other way, I would say I have just been convicted and I need to cancel my AOL account...

but if you really dont want to do that, RECORD the conversation, tell the opperator that, and tell them you want to cancel your account, quote vincent if you want, ask to speak to a manager, you MUST tell them you are recording the convo (law) and ask no, DEMAND to cancel the account.

trust me, you dont want to play around with AOL, we canceled our account, and they sent us to collections... total PITA and it gets expensive...

AOL is the devil, I hope they burn in hell....

aol, pfft. ya know that number list they use if you have dial up/ well, the number was our area code number but I guess it was located just beyond the area code region, and aol had it wrong, and we got charged long distance calling each time we dialed up using aol. we never had to pay aol because it was there fault, 2 our lawyer was really good, and 3, aol said it was in our area over the phone once, and then the next time they said that it wasn't,so yeah, after that no more aol in my house and my dad got the house upgraded to ethernet.
i'll quote phantom here: "AOL is the devil, I hope they burn in hell...."

Aol used to be good, before all the ads and free spyware detectors that forcefully come with it on windows. It has always frozen up on my mac, on my gateway 2000 486 (main and only windows computer, windows 95), I use aol 3.0, simplicity is the good stuff, thats why I choose mac. It's true we still get calls from Aol, even after discontinueing use of it 4 years ago. My Gateway is practically mint btw...I love it.

This issue is entirely dependent on the state that the call is taking place in. In some states only one party needs to know that the call is being recorded for it to be legal, in others both parties need to know.

However, if you hear the message "Your call may be monitored or recorded" from AOL when you call you are well within your rights in any state to record the call.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

Actually AOL used to be good before the World Wide Web came along and made it pointless.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

I read that once they verify your account, you simply say "Please cancel my account" and hang up. They have to cancel. Although, I see nothing wrong with killing the credit card either. If they can't take your money, what's the problem? Any company can arbitrarily say you owe them money, but that doesn't mean you have to pay it.

By the way, dead people don't have to pay their bills and companies cannot go after family members (except possibly spouses) for the money. If someone is dead, let them bill the crap out of them. Nothing will come of it.

This is the best part of the whole thing. Finally, AOL apparently cancels the account.
Plus, there's this: A few days ago, Gauthier obtained a letter from AOL that was sent to her mother in Florida. The letter was addressed to Melvin Berkowitz.

"Dear Mr. Berkowitz," it said. "We hope you'll come back to AOL."

Once an AOL customer, always an AOL customer.

Although they note that the conversation may be recorded, I don't know if that gives you the legal right to record them...

The majority of areas only require that one party is notified...that'd be you, the one doign the recording. Even in two-party consent states for purposes such as these there is nothing to be worried about.
