A fire in Hooper Bay in Western Alaska burned two school buildings and a dozen homes Aug. 3, 2006. The Red Cross reported only one minor injury.

More than 65 people in 13 families have been displaced by an early-morning fire Aug. 3, 2006 in the 1,100-person village of Hooper Bay in Western Alaska. State troopers say at least 16 buildings were destroyed.

Fire raging through Hooper Bay early Aug. 3, 2006 caused explosions of several small home fuel tanks, but did not reach huge fuel storage tanks, which were separated from the fire by a road.

Relief Supplies Arrive After Alaska Fire

Planeloads of relief supplies were flow to the remote Alaskan village of Hooper Bay where a possible arson fire destroyed the village center.

Water was not drinkable in some parts of the Yupik Eskimo village of 1,133, which doesn't have piped water or sewer systems, the Anchorage Daily News reported Saturday.

Thursday's blaze forced more than 250 people, or nearly a quarter of the population, to evacuate. It destroyed 35 buildings on 14 acres and came within 300 feet of bulk fuel tanks before it was extinguished.

More than 70 people were left homeless, the newspaper said. No one was injured.

Toxic ashes and material from exploding gas drums likely contaminated rooftop rain barrels and nearby tundra ponds, where people collect drinking water, said Myron Naneng, president of a regional non-profit group serving villages in western Alaska.

State troopers and fire marshals did not rule out arson as the cause of the blaze, a police spokesman said.
Give petty people just a little bit of power and watch how they misuse it! You can't silence the self doubt, can you?

At least people aren't getting hurt, but it's terribly sad to see people's homes and schools gone.

But it won't make the news because they don't have Mardi Gras there in Hooper Bay.
