As the title states, I am currently looking for a new desk. I've grown tired of my aluminum/glass desk. I need something new... Something... Wooden. I don't really know where I should go to get a desk, I mean the obvious place would be an OfficeDepot/OfficeMax, however whenver I look or sit at one of those desks, I cannot help but feel that is it going to fall apart any second. I just don't trust them. Anybody have any suggestions on a good, not too expensive wooden desk? Preferably a lite colored wood to match the rest of my room.

As long as you are just tired of your current desk (as opposed to having to get a replacement because it is falling apart or dysfunctional) you have time.
You'll need a few weeks.
Begin going weekly to you local St. Vincent De Pauls' (Vinnie's) Salvation Army (Sal's) and Goodwill (Willie's) stores looking for what you want. Go every week or even more often.
Let the people there know what you are looking for. Dress nice but not too nice. Tell them there is something in it for them if they call you with an item that you wind up buying. But let them know you are actively looking elsewhere, too.
You'll get an idea of the kinds of merchandise they get. (Each store has a certain quality level of merchandise, like retail stores.) You'll get an idea of what a good price is and what generally becomes available in your area and at that/those store(s).
Within a month or less you'll have a great desk and maybe a whale of a deal. I know a gal who got a $400+ desk ensemble, almost new, for $100. Very nice. Very handsome, heavy and solid.
However, if this isn't to your liking then I'll leave it to others to suggest names of retailers and/or brands of new furniture.
Good luck.

Ikea doesn't offer very many "classic" wood things. The designs are very in-the-moment, for the most part. The lifelines also vary drastically. You may get 6 years out of a desk, or you may get 1. I'd rather invest $500ish-$1000ish+ for a quality, classic-design wooden desk that lasts decades than spend $100-$400 at Ikea for something that won't last a fraction of one.
I'm going to vote a for Ikea.

Keep in mind you desk may not be in as good condition or as fashionable in 10 years.
I rather have a modern, cheap so so desk that I can replace every 5 years.

If you get a simplistic yet classic desk, fashionability shouldn't be an issue. It won't be like-new in a few decades, no, but you'll most certainly get a long life out of a well-made desk. One of my desks, handed down from a relative, is 40ish years old and still looks/works great.

If you are into that Antique looks sure or if you buy one of those utlra modern classic desks that cost you an arm and a leg.

Make a desk! I went through this process a while ago. I could not find a desk that was just right for my living situation and taste. Unless I spent huge amounts of money. So I just went and made one. Its a very simple desk, but its exactly what I wanted and it was super cheap.

Funny you say that. I did the same thing a few years ago. I bought a huge corner piece from Ikea (just the top, the legs had broken in the box) for about $40. I then made some wooden legs that I stained to match the top. Worked great until I moved to Puerto Rico. Ended up costing to much to ship due to being an "oversized" item.

Meh, that's just one design. I'm not sure on the size he is looking for.

For those in the UK, this can't be beat:

MFI Connecticut Cherry - £100.
I have the corner unit (no longer available, by the looks of it) - and it's built like a tank.

I'm with the "build it" crowd. Not that I built my desk, because it was actually given to me by a friend, but he built it.
Actually, he gave me three parts, there is another one somewhere out there, but I don't have room for it. The two longer parts are 6 feet long and 3 feet deep and the corner is 3'x3'. Made for design, with black lammy on it (which shows every speck of dust, unfortunately.)
It also has on one of the longer sides a 6'x1' shelf that raises about 6 inches off the first level. Perfect for a monitor. The shelf continues through the corner piece and half of the other piece.
The legs are very sturdy wood, too. Plus it has braces running the length of the parts so it's very sturdy. I love it.
The flaw, aside from having to dust often, is that it has extremely sharp corners - if you bump them, they will hurt. I have a pair of jeans with a perfect 90 degree L shape tear from this desk.

Ikea is nice, but I agree with Stradlater, that if you intend to keep this desk for a good long time, pay for quality. It doesn't have to be ultra-fashionable or "antique," but it can still be solid and functional, and never go out of style.
Otherwise, if you're a handy person, I'd suggest designing and building your own. And don't forget garage sales... you can find some gems if you've got the time.

They're actually a lot sweeter "in the wood". It's a shame they no longer do the corner unit, since they have some real nice sculpted curves on them.

The Jerker is good and also dirt cheap. If it lasts a few years you are laughing with all the time and money you save. If it gets dated you can always get the latest and greatest a few years later.
