I remember when the rumors of the Intel switch were floating around people were convinced Apple was going to move to intel just for the Viiv chip as they wanted to put it in the Mini to make a media PC.

Many also thought content would be locked down to the Viiv and if Apple didn't switch it would be left out in the cold.

So what the hell happened?

I don't think there is a "Viiv" chip. It's just a system specification.

It couldn't have disappeared if it wasn't something real/substantial to start with. Intel might try to come back to it, but for now I think they're too busy rolling in Core/Core 2 processors.

Viiv was/is Intel's attempt to push the same type of Intel-branded total package solution on the desktop market that they successfully pushed on the notebook market with 'Centrino'.

I wouldn't count on seeing it pop up in Mac land, but you never know.

Wikipedia is your friend
Viiv (pron. IPA /'vaiv/ rhymes with five) is a platform marketing initiative from Intel. Like Intel's Centrino and vPro, Viiv is a computer platform certification for a particular combination of Intel products as its primary components. It is an open specification for an Intel-based Media Center PC.
Specifically, Viiv is a particular combination of CPU, mainboard chipset, software, Digital Rights Management and network card. It is intended for primary use as an in-home media and desktop platform with the ability to operate as a normal PC or as a hardware media player/centre - running applications, playing DVDs, CDs, MP3, photographs and games as well as subscription based (partially DRM protected) content such as ILoveFilm, Napster and SKY

....

The Viiv platform allows for content providers to protect their content such as subscription-based movies, games and music using DRM technology. The Viiv platform does not add or remove DRM from media content or make any changes to how DRM-protected content is handled. DRM works on Intel Viiv technology-based PCs just like they do any other electronic device.

Apple doesn't seem interested in pushing Intel's platforms. That said Viiv has probably the worst logo I've ever seen. I always thought Centrino's logo was poor but Viiv makes it look amazing. I think part of the problem is that there aren't any super easy solutions to get what Viiv is supposed to do out the door. It's supposed to let your computer be a Tivo, and integrate with your TV and junk. Personally we've got a TV over IP set up at home right now, and I have no idea how on earth we'd set this up with one of those systems. I don't even think we could. With digital cable too I think there's some challenges. This sort of thing would have made a lot more sense when TV was basically done all over cable.
I think also another problem is centrino made tons of sense for notebooks, it was something sales people could push. Home desktops people typically always told me at BB "I just want something for e-mail and the web, oh and my daughter wants to use myspace." that's it. Intel my have a better chance if they made some E-Message or MyChip platforms, where the components were optimized for e-mail and myspace hahaha.
