I started a new job this past monday and I couldn't be anymore happier with apple. The guy whom I repaced seem to "mix things up" for me. Files from the past 4-5 years were all over the place. No organization at all. Now I've used spotlight probably once or twice at home simply because I know where everything is. I used it about 30+ times today and nailed it every single time. It probably saved me about 2-3 hours. Instead of archiving and organizing about 100 gb from 3 different machines I just dumped everything in one folder and spotlighted the crap out of it.

I just learned how to sync calendars in ical through my server and I setup all my to dos and schedule for tomorrow. All I have to do is subscribe to the cal when I walk in tomorrow morning. On top of that all the useful things I used in dashboard, hot cornering expose, etc. As hectic as everything was, the mac made it sooo comfy

The best part is the IT guy hates macs and can't use them for crap. the company is nazi about software and said not to install anything unless its approved. Well he has no idea what programs are third party for mac

god it feels good to be a gangster

Fun. The Mac really does make everything easier. I confess today I found myself wishing I already had time machine in my hands since I did a save instead of a save as...

This is why you have nightly backups to a second drive. Right? Right?

I am continually depressed by the fact that humanity is 96% stupid. I have no idea how I manage to maintain any hopefullness and enthusiasm in light of the facts.

You don't need to look at backup behavior to figure that out...

Nah that's why I dragged some layers around to produce something that looked very much like what it used to, and then left it. It wasn't a huge deal I'd just have liked to have the file at that point I still have a jpg of it. That said I only tend to back everything up about twice a month. At worst I'll lose two week's worth of work which isn't fun but isn't so bad.

You can totally automate the process & never think about it again. It takes about 6 or 8 mouse clicks in CCC, Deja Vu, or some similar app. I go on about my business knowing that I never have to worry about losing anything. It's a happy feeling.

That's a bit bleedin' pessimistic, ain't it?
I put it at more like 95%.

I have some new work that I wouldn't want to lose so I'll probably soon do another back up. But I rarely do enough that I couldn't recover. For example most of my poetry I post on my blog, most of my graphics at least have the final versions on flickr if not the originals.

Trusting Flickr's profit model to be sound enought to keep the lights on indefinitely doesn't seem like such a sound idea, either. I don't truse web-based storage as far as I can kick it. My partner was using some sort of web-based "Employer help" site a few years ago to build an employee manual based on one of their templates. She got about 10 hours into the thing and was almost done, when they went belly-up, and her bookmark 404'd on her.

Just throw down for an external drive, plug it in, download CCC, spend 5 minutes writing a backup plan to its prefs, and be done with it. (general advice, not aimed particularly at you, Salty)

The Mac installed user-base does give me hope, now and again, yes.

The Linux/Unix userbase too...

Rsync kicks ass. It's flexible, secure, and performs incredibly well.
