I'm a lil spoiled but not that bad. Like, my parents helped me with college a lot, and if I really really wanted something and there was good reason, like my iMac for graphics in grade 10, then they'd go for it. But that sorta thing is retarded.

my cousin has every ipod model made, and only has about 600 songs that he really listens to...the other 30+gigs he steals from me and pretends he listens to, did i mention he also has two dual G5's, 5 dell 24" lcd's, macbook pro, macbook, powerbook, ibook, mac mini, cube, 50" hd plasma, drives a corvette, is looking to buy a 'vacation car', clocks in at work at about 1pm and leaves at 3pm, his work day consists of him walking around the plant his mom runs diligently, he has 4 xbox 360's but uses em less than once a month, etc....etc...
he infact told me one day that 15 million dollars isnt enough money for the rest of his life...and he's 24. really?....you REALLY cant live your next 50 some years on 15 million dollars even though his mom pays all his bills. envy...sure, im envious...but only for his opportunities in life (that he refuses to take advantage of) not the stuff he owns.

if i can afford it and i'll have money left over for small things like soap laundry detergent ect than i'll buy whatever. am i spoiled? a very little bit, but I buy my stuff with money i make, and spend it well, meaning i dont blow it on insanely stupid things. me? i have 5 ipods: 1 gig shuffle, 4 gig black nano, 60 gig photo, 60 gig video, 6 gig silver mini.
as i mentioned in another thread, my photo is slowly giving up on life, and the video is the replacement with all the stuff my photo has backed up on it plus a few handbraked videos.
am i spoiled? meh, but that's me talking. i honestly don't think i am

I have a little sister, and I'm shocked at how spoilt girls are compared to boys. My sister is about 10, and she's fine, but her friends drive me mad. They all idolize divas and try to act like they are rich, and the leader of their pack is this little brat who is the most spoilt of all them. They will be nightmares when they turn into teenagers.
Luckily I'll get away from them when uni starts again next month.

I grew up balancing on the line between extreme poverty and being homeless.
That said when I have kids it'll be hard not to spoil them.

My family is quite well-off, but the policy has always been that if I wanted something "big" (e.g. cameras / computer hardware or software / gadgets / etc) that I would have to save my money. If my birthday or Hanukkah rolled around and I was after something, my folks would pitch in a respectable chunk of the cost.
That being said, every one of the computers I've owned (with one exception) I have paid for out of pocket - an iMac DV SE in 1999, a Quicksilver G4 in 2001, a 12" PB in 2004 along with a G5 that same year and a MacBook Pro this year. The exception was the PB 12", which was a high school graduation present.

Perfect example of how MTV has changed over the years. When MTV started, it would have made fun of such a show... a bunch of spoiled rich kids being jerks to everyone but their parents (the only people they suck up to) and they aren't all that nice to them. I couldn't count on my hand the number of "but daddy!!!!!" I hear on that horrible show... and that's just when I'm clicking through.
The problem is... kids actually try to model their behavior after those people. I've watched a few shows only to say "what can I learn from this so my kids never turn out this way."

I know! How many 'LOL HOW CAN I MAKE MY CIVIC GO'S FASTER WITH A INTAKE LOL????? PLZZZZ HELP!!!!" threads can one take?
I used to hate spoiled kids, and kids whose parents are paying for college, and kids whose parents buy them new cars, but then I kind of put myself in that situation. My dad offers me a nice shiny new car to replace my 10 year old car with a window that won't roll down. Do I say, "Gee golly, Dad. That's a mighty fine offer, but I think earning my own money and buying my own car makes me appreciate it more and will help build my character"? No! I freakin take the car. If my dad offers to pay for college so I'm not paying off loans for the next 15-infinity years, do I turn him down? Of course not. But my dad doesn't do these things, and I guess my character is building. Granted, he didn't help pay for half of my car when I bought it, and he'll help me out when I'm strapped for cash, like when I had to pay rent but wasn't going to get a paycheck for another month, but I buy all of my own 'toys:' iMac DV in 2000, iBook G4 in late 2004, new PC and widescreen monitor this summer, etc etc.
So I don't hate spoiled kids, I hate parents that don't care enough about their kids that they spoil them.

There is a difference between giving your kids the "tools" they need to make it in the world and spoiling them.
I would NEVER give my child a car. I would buy another car and let them borrow it (all the time), but it would be MY car.
I would pay for college, but it would be with an agreement (maintaining a higher GPA, keeping them on a reasonable budget, and making sure they had a summer job, etc.). I'm not going to make them starve or not have fun, but it's all about balance.

My grandpa spoils himself. He buys a ton of Macs. His newest is an iMac Core Duo, with everything maxed out, and guess what? It sits under a sheet and has never booted up. He bought a high-capacity battery for his PowerBook, so it would hold a charge enough so that he can boot it up every year or so ( but it still doesn't). He does use his iMac G4 though more often, like 2x a week to manage his small iPhoto library.

I think you have to give MTV a little more credit than that -- they do a pretty good job of subverting the latest trends for their own means. With the whole Paris Hilton, wealthy socialite meme these days, it's fashionable to either (a) be a spoiled kid or (b) mock spoiled kids. This show does a perfect job of appealing to spoiled kids who don't know they're being mocked, and, by being so over the top, also appealing to people who like to laugh at them.
That said, I hate the show, but MTV are masters of manipulation. It is sad that some kids are this spoiled and MTV glorifies it. What's saddest is how spoiled kids tend to act so victimized and entitled...

That's a good idea. My dad did the car thing when I was in high school. He bought a '96 Probe and let me drive it, but reminded me all the time that it was his car. I suppose I might have gotten it as a graduation gift since it was paid off and not worth too much as a trade-in by that time, except I kind of screwed that deal up by losing my license.
My dad also pays for my books each semester, and he pays off the interest on my non-subsidized loans so that it doesn't accumulate while I'm in school, except that this year I've got a job, so I'll be paying that interest off myself. I'm already in enough debt as it is.

I've seen a number of parents pull the car thing above and it seems to work well. I noticed that my friends that owned cars usually got into more trouble than those that didn't own the car. It's not an exact science, but I think there is something about having to ask to use the car that keeps things based on reality.

My dad bought me an old Corolla and liked to say it was his car, except when it had mechanical trouble, then it was my car

My college was paid for. I had a car since I was 16. And they paid for my insurance. Despite all that, I think they did a good job in raising me. I was raised the "old-fashioned" way. I think my left earlobe is longer than my right as my mom used to use that as my leash.
I also think most of that is their way of saying, hey, we're providing you with everything so you can concentrate on your schoolwork etc. It didn't quite work as I wasn't exactly the best student. But I think there was also some safety and economics involved too (i.e. they bought me a car for college instead of boarding me. 15K for the car... vs 10K for dorms for 5 years).
But in lieu of those big ticket items - I had no "luxury" items growing up. In otherwords, I had very few toys, my clothes were mostly hand-me-downs from older relatives or Kmart stuff; The alarm that woke me up on my first day of college was the same radio that woke me up on my first day of school in 3rd grade.
I guess being spoiled is more of an attitude than posession. I do know some folks that are super rich, who are very down to earth. And some not so rich... who act like prima donnas.

Very true. It sounds like your parents cared about you enough to raise you right.

It is not just with objects but also the way parents approach their children; let's not make them upset with rules and inculcate kindness into them.
It is sad but it seems that the kids in their 20's live a second teenager years.

Oh geez hell no. My first car was a Mercury Cougar Wagon.... hehe.
E30s rock. If I had any car repair skills I'd get one too and track the hell out of it.

I really like watching "My Super Sweet 16" with my wife - we get the biggest laugh out of how horrible and stupid people in this world actually are! Then we try to guess at what the parents do for a living and how they could come up with $150,000 for a birthday party. Really, when my daughter turns 16, I'm not buying her a Bently . . .

Seriously, though, your initial post is one of the most horribly-constructed abuses of the so-called language I've seen in recent history. You should consider writing well enough for your posts to make some modicum of sense, at least.
