... Tom Cruise to Paramount: You can't fire me! I quit!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14472455/
But of course the real reason is money. Here's an excerpt from the Wall Street Journal:
As Paramount prepared to release "M:I:III," the studio realized that female fans were falling by the wayside, apparently turned off by Mr. Cruise's behavior. Paramount attempted to pull the focus back on the movie by having Mr. Cruise perform stunts at multiple screenings around the world, including jumping out of helicopters and speeding on race boats.
Still, Mr. Redstone estimates that Mr. Cruise's behavior cost the movie between $100 million and $150 million in ticket sales.

Using his great Scientology powers, he'll have to jump into Redstone's body and make him sign a new contract. That is big news.

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion - Steven Weinberg.

Or maybe the movie just looked stupid. I saw MI:2, and that was horrible. The worst was the bike racing at the end, where the tires 'miraculously' changed from road tires, to offroad knobby tires, and back and forth. The plot was awful, the stunts were marginal, and overall I'd rather watch a few episodes of Dino-Riders.

(un)Fortunately, in this second age of Hollywood, Actors aren't owned by Studios, Actors are free agents (with their agents) and someone else will pick up Cruise and stick him in another movie.

Except for the special effects there is nothing interesting in Mission Impossible 3 as there was nothing interesting in Mission Impossible 2. If the second one made money it is because of the first one. Sometimes there should not be any second and third movie. It is not because one female said she was turned off by Cruise's behavior that it is so. Personally I do not care about it; none of my business it is his private life. I did not even read about it, there are more interesting things to read about.
Also, it just shows that when it comes to the studios money is more important that quality.

MI1 was overly complicated. MI2 was just really stupid action and for me one of the worst movies ever. Haven't seen MI3 yet.

The LA Times has a pretty good take on it .... apparently talks had already broken down over money and they were headed toward an amicable "parting of the ways" until Redstone went public.

Exactly. I think it's kinda dumb that Paramount is blaming Tom Cruise for them (paramount) producing crappy movies.

Well they said they like him as an actor but his retarded behavior off screen is what is turning people away, not the movie itself.
Oh and... "As a teenager, Cruise planned on becoming a Roman Catholic priest." Guess he did the next best thing.

I still haven't seen MI:3. I probably would have if it wasn't for him. I guess Paramount was correct.
I may still see it on DVD, but I am in no rush to do so.

So if MI:3 had another actor in it they think more people would have gone? That's hard to believe. He IS the movie... saying they lost $100 million because of him is like you giving me $50 and I saying that you should have given me $100... hey! you just lost me $50!!!

Who cares why Paramount dumped him? Its fully within their rights to do it, and they did it. There's no doubt his public actions have tarnished his movie career, whether or not you agree with his actions. Either way, he's got enough money and star power to do whatever he wants. Only now, it won't be with Paramount.
Big deal.

He can act. I say this because I've seen him on screen (Last Samurai, for example) and thought highly of him. But it's obvious that it's been acting, because when he's not in a role, he's a royal, turbo, nucular, 'tard of the n'th degree. The fact that he has opinions, like his (stupid, mindless, neandertal, idiotic, etc.) idea about antidepressant medications and postpartum depression, is no problem. The idea that he might share them with others is no bid deal. But using his "market the damn movie, Tom" TV time to call ANYONE on the carpet for using medications to control postpartum depression is insane.
I lost a friend to postpartum depression-it's real, as are other forms of depression, and until Mr. I DON"T KNOW SH*T realizes this, he's a threat to the health of depressed people all over. Hey, maybe HE will get depressed over being canned! What a nicely ironic twist, eh?

It's easily the best of the three IMO. It was basically Alias: The Movie, which is part of the reason I liked it.

I liked MI-3 too. Tom Cruise is still a tool, though, and counts as a mark against a movie in my book. (And he's not that good an actor. Not wretched, but hardly top-caliber.)

Tom Cruise educates.
Furthermore, he actually had the balls to say some of the things he said in an "everything to lose" position. To my knowledge, none of his other scientology buddies have gone out and talked about it like he has. It was a refreshing change from the typical liberal crap I hear from Hollywood types.
Tom Cruise has confidence.
Furthermore, his antics did generate hype and interest. I know I was more interested in his movies because of it. He received front page news stories every week, he received his own South Park episode, he inspired a ton of YTMND sites and started new fads, he was the topic of discussion on many forums. He single-handedly generated more buzz around his movies by association than did the entire Paramount marketing staff with their multimillion dollar budget.
Tom Cruise is genius.
The fact that Paramount couldn't turn his actions into sales is their problem. Bad PR is good PR, right? He did everything he was asked to do and didn't compromise his morals or beliefs to do it. For that, I respect Tom Cruise even if I disagree with him. Which is more than I can say for Paramount.

I would agree that medication is necessary for some, but I would agree moreso that many problems can be solved without it. Too many people look to drugs for a solution when they should be looking at what they are not doing right.

I'm going to get a 3'*5' poster of Tom Cruise from that southpark episode and put it up in my closet. Then get that sound effect "Tom Cruise trapped in the cloest" from "R Kelly" and rig it to play every time my clothes are moved out of the way.
