Combining the power of a PC with a quality LCD and stylish design, Sony today unveiled the new VAIO LS1 TV/PC Combo.

Featuring a framed display with a transparent border for a stunning, floating effect, the LS1 model packs the essentials for powerful computing into a slim chassis discreetly hidden behind the back of a flat-panel 19-inch WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) LCD display.

Apple® today unveiled the all-new iMac®, redesigned from the ground up around a stunning LCD flat screen that floats in mid-air—allowing users to effortlessly adjust its height or angle with just a touch.

Talk about floating an idea

Why is it that Sony can't bring itself to design something that doesn't look horridly ugly? Plenty of smaller companies seem to be able to do it easily.

As far as all in ones it is the best looking after the iMac. Still isn't all that hot though but better than that gateway one.

Sony used to make beautiful stuff. I have no idea what went wrong with them.

Honestly Sony's stuff doesn't tend to look that bad. It just has more of a... I dono. It's got a different feel to it. A lot of PC makers use rigid lines to make their stuff look tough and high tech. Apple tends to use softer lines, and curves.

Actually you drew a bad comparison. It is an all in one so it isn't like the lamp iMac but the current one.

Frankly I think the current iMac is very clunky and unpleasant to use. So this Sony thing isn't that bad in comparison.

Clunky and unpleasant? What is so clunky about it?

The chin, and the missing sexy arm that the last model had.

I frankly don't miss the arm at all. The screen is at perfect height and it can still be swiveled on a glossy surface (like my desk). I also prefer the chin to the cut-off basketball of the previous design. It was still a cool computer, but the newer ones are better, if only for portability.

The lamp iMac was an all-in-one-minus-speakers, wasn't it?

Nope.

Edit: I was wrong. It was a wireless keyboard.

oh yeah, it's wireless. I own one. And I have a 3Com 'Audrey' which is similar, but smaller.

My Gateway/AOL iAppliance runs Windows2000 - and has a 40GB laptop harddrive.

and a touchscreen.

I think Sony's laptops are decent-looking, but that all their attempts at all-in-one desktops have been hideous.

When the iMac G5 came out, I thought it was uglier than the lamp, but it grew on me, such that by the time I got one, I settled on "it looks great." Far more pleasant to look at than most desktop computers I've seen. Too bad my desk is so much of a disaster all the time.

the worst part IMO is that they didn't "trump" the 2002 imac design. the only clear "benefit" is a wireless keyboard right? i stopped using my wireless keyboard because i found it annoying.

Well one unit with a few chuncks.

What this Sony is is a computer behind the LCD, the same as the current iMac.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
