She was abducted at age 10. She's now 18.

DNA tests prove identity of Austrian kidnap victim

Photos released by police of the hiding place in his house where the young woman said she was kept showed a small, cluttered room with narrow concrete stairs leading down to it from an entrance so small it would have to be crawled through. Another photo showed a metal hatch that sealed the windowless, underground room.

Police on Thursday said there was a bed and a toilet in the cramped space. Images on TV showed a small television in the room, which also had a sink and was littered with piles of books. Police said the woman was occasionally allowed to watch videos.

I don't know how anyone can come out of something like that with a good mental condition. I would snap after a week.

It's amazing what humans can endure. Some people could probably come out of that and get their life on track, others have no trauma in their lives and are train wrecks.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if she has serious emotional problems for the rest of her life.

I'm amazed by stories like this. I hope that she can recover and lead a productive life, but I can see what SWG means about how one could snap.

Humans are tough critters. We are all the ultimate survivors. There was a period of tough weather conditions and disease where the entire human race dwindled to about 3,000 people. We all come from them. We are all survivors.... some people just forget this, and give up and die.

That said, I'm sure she'll be seeing a shrink the rest of her life. Hopefully she can just forget about it, move on, and start her life out again and leave that crap behind her.

I would have rather seen him go to prison and be either A) brutally killed or B) Bubba's new girlfriend.

to that girl. Eight days being a prisoner is a long time, let alone eight years. I wonder what she looks like now? I also wonder what happened to her during that time. She escaped while washing his car, I wonder if he used her as a house slave..

They are doing a pretty good job of hiding her face right now. This has a pic of the weirdo that abducted her.

I'm glad that Europe has much better privacy laws than the US. It'd be very important that her undoubtedly fragile state of mind be protected from paparazzi and other invasive prurient curiosity. She's going from solitary confinement and psychological torture to intense media spotlight--gotta be supremely hard on her, now and for years to come. It's great that the authorities are keeping her interests foremost in their media releases, as opposed to the tasteless grandstanding by officials and voyeuristic media feeding frenzy in the US like, for example, in the Ramsey case (then and now.)

If details emerge about her, it's best that they emerge in some context in print without photos, like for example, when her mother reveals that she weighs less now, 93 pounds, than when you was kidnapped 8 years ago, in spite of having grown 15 cm.

that would make sense actually. 10 years with your abductor, and perhaps he was kind to her the entire time and no sex (unlikely but perhaps) and during the ages of 8 and 18 those are very hormone high times, and since he could of been the only male figure in her life, falling in love with her captor is a very high possibility.

This article mentions briefly a subject that we all assumed anyway.

This captor did not deserve to end his life so quickly. He should have had the time to feel first hand what it's like to be on the other end.

My guess is he's in hell. I can honestly say... most of the people I know are going to hell, it makes me sad... but... this... I mean... I know hell's terrible and all... but... I get a strange comfort from knowing he's there.

My guess would be lots of fire and eternal separation from God and hope. Far worse than any punishment men could imagine... I'm pretty sure the fire is just for show though... imagine an entire eternity with no hope of anything better than complete and total despair?

My personal belief (not that this is the philosphy thread or anything) - since I don't believe in an afterlife, etc. - is that how you are remembered is what is important.

If you were a good person on earth, people remember you as such, tell stories about you to their kids, etc. and you live on as a "good" person through them. Heaven.

If you are an asshat like this guy, people remember you as such, tell stories about you to their kids, and forever you are known as an evil son-of-a-bitch. Hell.

There was a similar case in Belgium, even more horrifying, because it was whole organization, an industry. I do not remember details but one can find. There were more victims and many of them died. Medieval Europe had a tradition of such dungeons, sex prisons and so on.

"Nightmare on Elm Street" comes to mind when reading that last bit. Where are you if NO ONE talks about you or wants to remember you? are you just in limbo?

Hmm, that would mean Macbeth, Richard III of England, Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia, and Antonio Salieri really got screwed then.

Sucks to be them, I guess.

Marc Dutroux was the ringleader in the case you're thinking of.

That was what could almost be called a child porn "industry". Dozens of victims, infant to teen, most of them died, IIRC.

The henchmen and backgrounds still haven't been entirely smoked out, and probably never will.

Somehow to me what I find tragic, apart from the obvious trauma, is that she was denied an education. it will be a long time before she can understand what, other than suffering, life can offer.
