I'm sitting here with a 5 year old computer (G4 Quicksilver 867) and i have no idea what I want as a replacement. I'm in no rush at the moment and don't NEED a new computer now, but its getting left behind with certain things, and it's done its job well for the last 5 years.
I basically use my Mac for internet, word processing, some design work with photoshop etc., MSN/iChat and a few games (I've got a console, so don't really use the Mac that much for games, but then maybe Boot Camp or Parallels would get me playing a few PC games). I'd also want to get an Elgato TV adaptor, I know I could get one for my G4, but I'm not sure how well it would handle TV recording compared to a modern Intel chip Mac.
I've already got the Dell 24" hooked up to it, so if I did go for an iMac as the next computer, I'd have 2 screens, but I'd need a bigger desk!
Mac mini - would have to be a dual core, not the solo, and it has the onboard graphics.
iMac - Ideal for me really, but don't have the space for iMac and 24" at the moment.
Mac Pro - Bigger tower than my G4, lot of money to put out, but then my last 2 macs have been with me for 5 years each, so it would last.
MacBook/Macbook Pro - Never had a laptop before, but I guess they have the same pro's and cons as the Mac mini and iMac (except for the Core Solo in the mini).
I'm aware that the Core 2 is on the way, and maybe if they made a Core 2 Mac mini with the better graphics chipset, I'd be set with that. But at the moment, with what Macs there are now and are likely to come soon, i have no idea what to go for!!??!!

iMac FTW baby! I think a speed bump or switch to Core 2 has to happen sooner or later. When it does it's the perfect time to purchase.
Love the sig BTW.

Sounds to me like you want a Mac Pro: external monitor, Photoshop work, and you don't have to wait for the Core 2 iMac. If you can afford it, why not?

I say iMac... it will handle everything you want to do and it supports your extra monitor.

Yep. You really don't need a Mac Pro. Not for the list of things you intend to do.

Mac Book Pro: powerful enough, seperate gpu, and you can disconnect and take your computer with you when you hit the road. Expensive tho.

Yeah I think its going to be a Core 2 something, like I said I have a Dell 24", and I have an iSight, which isn't such a big deal if i did get an iMac because i could sell it off with the G4. A Mac Pro is too much, so Its probably going to be a mini, iMac or laptop.
What are the chances of a Core 2 Mac mini, or are they more likely to leave the mini and MacBook with the Yonah Core chips and put the iMac and MBP up to Core 2???

I'd wait till the iMac goes C2D and then pick it up.

Here's a scientifically proven method for making a decision like this:
You take in the info you need to make the decision and don't really think about it. Just go with your gut. Your subconscious brain is able to do all the complicated thinking far far better than any conscious effort to make a decision will ever be able to.
I know it's not really the kind of advice you are looking for but…

CS3 would be huge selling point for me... sadly I don't think I'll be able to afford both a new Mac and CS3... though I might buy CS3 with some saved cash just before school is out so I still get the student discount.
