I'm a student pastor here in Louisiana. Wednesday night I was speaking to our junior and senior high groups, and I was using a "unique" illustration. We're now in the last week of a series called "Everything You Need to Know About Life is in Your Fish Tank." Long title, I know.
Anyways, for last Wednesday I was using an illustration involving a beautiful red betta fish and a blender. Midway through the lesson I pulled the black sheet off the top of the blender, with Uncle Rico (the fish) swimming around inside. I was speaking about the way life makes you feel at times, how sometimes it feels like forces beyond your control are manipulating your life for the worst. At this time I was pulling the cup part of the blender up while pressing the button for the highest setting.
I was going to pull it away "at the last second," and I was right in the middle of saying, "But when you feel like you're finished, God can swoop in and pluck you out of the situation."
Unfortunately, I was just a millisecond too late, and the blender actually sucked the cup back down. I turned the button off really quickly (the room was absolutely silent), and as the water stilled, Uncle Rico was in about 50 pieces. I stood there with a blank, disappointed look on my face as the class died laughing for about 5 minutes. Some of the students were grossed out, and one young woman on my staff get really upset about it. She's a PETA type, and I had to apologize to her later.
The bad thing is that it completely ruined about 20% of my message, seeing that the rest of the section depended on that illustration. Not to mention that I had already kind of become attached to Uncle Rico, and had planned on keeping him in my office Anyways, it was kind of a funny/wacky moment that I wanted to share with you guys.
Try getting control of 70 students after something like that...

And in real life, of course, nobody comes "swooping down" to save you from the stupidity of other people…as you so aptly demonstrated.
That story is awesome!

And here we have a prime example of the good lord punishing cockyness in a highly effective manner while at the same time demonstrating that bad things do happen to good peop....fish.
Still funny though.

I'm sorry to hear about your fish. That sucks. Sorry that your illustration didn't work out later.

There is no freaking humor to it. It just shows folks an example of extremely bad taste and poor planning.

Of couse, you know - the real fish in this situation was YOU. Life doesn't always work out for those living on this planet. What could have been a great lecture turned out to be a tough situation for you. Interesting twist of events.
If it were me, I would have disconnected the wires from the motor inside the base of the blender so it looked functional, but wouldn't ever really turn on.

You're at the 'NN, dude.
So, tell me, was the fish gay... ...or not?

It's sad really. I'm no PETA person either, but I'd be rather upset to see that someone made a fish smoothy while trying to make a religious point.
I guess I would have made sure I didn't kill the fish by either taking out the blender part or not having it plugged in or something.

The point could not have been made without the blender turned on. They also would've seen that the blade wasn't there, which would've made the illustration much less effective.
Doofy: Didn't get a chance to ask the fish if he was gay or not. Our friendship was rather short-lived...pun intended.

I can appreciate that the power needed to be on for the demo, but the blade didn't need to be there IMHO.
Sure, slightly less effective... but also much safer for the fish.

Would have, had the fish not been completely obliterated. It would've been like drinking water with half a tea spoon of salt mixed in.
