For me being late at an interview, says I do not want that job.

At work it says I do not care about my work and the people I work with and I am so disorganized that I get get to work on time.

With friends, I do not respect you guys and do not give a damn about your timeline.

Of course, I assume you mean consistently late? Being late once in a rare while doesn’t make you a bad person. I’ve been late to work once, and that was because the freeway was shut down, and there were no detours to take.

Of course when you are stuck somewhere it is not your fault, then you can call the office and let them know.

But, even a few minutes late every day says you want to get fired.

I'm always exactly one hour late for everything, for some reason.

Everyone just tells me to turn up an hour ahead of when they actually want me to turn up. It works.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Heresy! I live in the correct time zone. They all live in the wrong one!

(Actually, I've been refusing to observe British Summer Time for some years now. That might have something to do with my being an hour late for things. Except I'm late in Winter too.)

Being late to a party is just good common sense.

Being late to do something with my friends says that I actually have a life, but I made time to meet them anyway. They're busy as well; I understand when they're late too.

Being late for work says I do a metric ton of overtime each week for pay below industry standard, so they can cry if they want.

Being late to an interview might say "Hey assswipes, if I make you wait a few extra minutes maybe you'll remember me later on."

Being late to work might say "Hey assswipes, start paying me a fair wage and maybe then I'll respect this job enough to get here on time."

Being late with friends might say "Hey assswipes, you're my friends, try to understand when I'm a little late to the dark stinky bar where I have to pay for overpriced watered down drinks."

Calling your prospective or current employer "asswipe" tells them that you want to be let go for cause, and thus not qualify for unemployment. Calling your friends "asswipe" tells them that you don't expect much in the way of personal hygene from them.

Occasional lateness is something that happens to everyone, even people who work very hard at being on time or early. But consistent lateness (not to say a consistent period of lateness as in Doofy's case, just "never on time") says that the person has few organizational skills and thus is probably quite uncoordinated and unproductive in what he or she does.

I get so worked up about being on time that I feel late if I'm not 15 minutes early. Seriously.

I typically walk into classes twenty minutes late... or more. I've only had one Prof who actually made me scared to show up late. If I was late for his class I just didn't show. Dr. Cornell actually changed her attendance policy in light of me But she loves me to death cause I'm bright, and I can shoot down the dumb kids who always want to play devil's advocate.
"So you're saying that all Christian education has to be based on the Bible, but... what if they use a Christian book"
(Dr. Cornell looks around the room, notices David's hand up)
"Would you like to answer that David?"
"Uhh, if it's a Christian book, by a good author it should be grounded in the Bible so you'd still be biblically based, if it's a bad book though you shouldn't be using it."
That was I think my first class with her, after that she'd rely on me to back her up, since she knew I could get away with more as a student than she could for shooting down dumb students. And in turn if I was ever getting ganged up on in a class discussion she'd come to my aide and trounce everyone...
Sigh I miss my church min classes...

Coming into class late, consistently, is rude to the whole class and the instructor. It interrupts the lecture, breaks the rapport that's been built since class started, and can completely derail a class. It's bad and it hurts others who are on time and want to learn.

I've been taking college classes (off and on, lately very much on) since 1976, plus I've taught college level courses for about 12 years. Doing this is BAD and hurtful. It doesn't matter if YOU think the material is not worth your time-you may as well just not show up-it hurts those who WANT to be there.

That's fine. Then pick a distance ed class, or talk to the professor and cut a deal.

But interrupting class by coming notoriously late hurts all other students.

Oops, I made a mistake. reading comprehension. I was talking absences.

You're right, showing up late isn't particularly good form, though I still think dropping grades isn't a fair response.

I dunno. It's hard, but if communicated in advance, it's fair.

That's not to say that you might have a legitimate reason, and that you will be excused after the fact. But you can't come with BS attitude and manners and expect to welcomed.

Depends on the class. Some you can walk in right in the back and not even be noticed. Others yah it does matter. Typically I'm just late to my morning classes when they're the first class of the day at 8 30 or 9. Though often I just don't show up. As far as I'm concerned if I can know the material well, and show that I do, unless they lectures are great, I won't be there.

Cause depending on the class it might have just started.

Our classes are an hour and twenty minutes. If i show up twenty minutes late I miss the first bit of the lecture but I can still clue in easy. One of my profs always does a Scripture reading then prays then starts class within the first ten minutes of class. So often I'll get there and a good five students will be in the hall waiting for her to finish praying so we can all walk in.

The school also is very laid back. Nearly everyone lives on campus, aside from one or two profs it's very laid back.

I have a friend she is consistantly late and I know from experience when she says that she will be at such a time, I will be sitting in my apartment for one more hour then I will go out the door to wait for her and she still get there 20 minutes late or at the wrong door. Example, she asked me to take of her cat and house while she would be on vacation with her kids for one week. So, I was supposed to get to her house around 3:00 pm. Then she calls me in the morning to let me know that she would be visiting a friend around one then would pick me up at 3:00 pm and she promised her son that she would drive him to a friend before 5:00 pm. At 4:00 she calls me and tell me that she would be late, but will be there in 15 minutes, she got to my house at 4:45, then the phone rings it is her son not too happy that she is late, because people are depending on him to be on time. She does not understand why he is angry. So we get to her house and she tells she will be back on Friday or Saturday morning, I am telling her that I have to get back to my place by Friday night because I need to organize myself for my coming work week. Friday night, no sign of her, no phone call, she forgot her phone book at her ex-husband's place. So I left lots of dry food for the cat and water. She came back Sunday night, but thanks to her neighbours the cat did not die.

Now I call that inconsiderate, and selfish.

In my university lectures are voluntary. You only have to register the course, deliver assignments - if there are any - and take the exam. Of course showing up for class helps to get good grades, but if you don't need or want to go to class.. you don't have to..

A very good university.

Ya, the European method of higher education puts the burden of responsibility on the student. As a result, students must take their own initiative, and I believe they learn more this way.

I agree, that works, too, especially with more responsible students.
Actually, it is different from class to class at my university.

But even if the lectures are voluntary, you shopuldn;t be allowed to come late all the time. The prof should lock the door
