A report issued this week shows that major American tobacco companies have increased the level of nicotine in their cigarettes, making them more addictive. VOA's Melinda Smith has that story.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reports that nicotine levels of cigarettes sold in that state rose by an average of 10 percent during the period of 1998 to 2004. Three of the most popular brands favored by younger smokers, Marlboro, Newport and Camel, showed an increase of 12 per cent. Kool, a menthol brand, had a nicotine level of 20 percent. Another brand, called Doral Lights, measured a 36 percent increase.

One health scientist said tobacco companies already have the technology to remove the nicotine entirely and produce a non-addictive cigarette, but have been unwilling to do so.

The Cigarette companies should be prosicuted for this.

Prosecuted? Heck no, man.

They're giving people *more* of what they buy cigarettes for.

In fact, smokers can now smoke *less* than before.

Let's say the tabacco companies invest their profits into the development of a smokable drug that is not based on Nicotine and does not cause cancer. Would the government allow them to sell it?

No. They'd classify it as a drug and spread propaganda about how it will turn you into a mindless zombie.

We do live in a fascist state, however the current fascists in power seem to like Tobacco more than other drugs. Its definitely not a money thing as some of the major tobacco companies used to make cigarettes with a marijuana/tobacco mixture for other markets and If they sold them here I'm sure the money would be just as good if not better. Its just that our government wants to control our lives as much as possible regarding things that they don't like. We are perfectly free to do what they want us to do.
