For Junior high/ high school? A friend of mine had asked me about getting one for his kids. I really had no idea that these unit were still on the market. Any suggestions on one for this age category?

We have used some at work and they have been awsome. Though I would never buy one for a junior high student.... why pay three times as much for something that will break twice as easily? Buy him a $500 laptop instead.

My fear on a tablet computer is that the hinge is located in the center of the screen instead of at the edges, and takes a lot more stress. Add to that the fact that it has to be articulated to pivot and it just gets weaker.

I've seen hinges break on laptops made by every manufacturer. I don't know that I'd trust a tablet under rigorous use.

Add into that mix that the intended user is a Jr. high school/High School student. Kids being kids are going to be some what rough on equipment.

I should add, if the goal is handwriting for notetaking in class, something like

Welcome to ACECAD the ACECAD

might work.

On Windows, they can insert the handwriting into Office documents. For Mac and Linux there are third party softwares that convert the proprietary formats into PDF.

The Acecad uses its own pen and clipboard, bring your own paper. It can use compact flash besides its internal memory.Check amazon for prices, I know I can get the Acecad at tigerdirect.com for about $99

Typing is quicker though... so why bother with handwriting unless for diagrams?

Ergonomics, for one. Also, for note-taking, I vastly prefer to hand write things as it allows much more flexibility in formatting, diagrams, symbols, and whatever, than typing does.

LOL, writing on a tablet PC is far less ergonomic than typing on a keyboard, so what's your point again ?
