This coming semester I will be taking an accounting course and a finance course. For most of my uses thus far in college, running Word or another word processor for the purpose of taking notes has been fine.

However, I will be entering in a lot of different formulas, pertaining to present value, future value, accounting etc and Word just doesn't seem cut out for the task. Any suggestions?

Uhm, you can enter complex formulas in Word.

Insert -> Objects -> Microsoft Equation

What's the problem with that ?

Learn LaTeX. Much faster to type in equations than point-and-click them in.
Or, in an ideal universe in which you have plenty of time, take notes once by hand, then later type them in, locking the material into your brain as you do so.

LaTex is total overkill for an accounting class.
