Wow, I'm game. Should this be seen in a theater, or with a really good home theater? I haven't been to a theater in about 5 years now. Would it be worth the cost?

It is strange that a movie rated R has a young girl as a lead. At first I thought it was a kids movie.

Here's another teaser:

http://www.deltorofilms.com/pantrail..._teaser_hi.mov

I'm so there. It's actually Rated R, I'm sick of the PG-13 sh*t that's been coming out.

Anyone see Mirror Mask? Pretty cool movie.

It looks like what the movie Legend looked like to me as a kid in terms of scariness and art direction.

There is only one Labyrinth and that is the one where we get to see David Bowie's package.

The trailer looks good though.

I hope it's better than mirror-mask. Though written by my favourite author and directed by a pretty sweet graphic artists it was a snooze for the most part

Looking forward to this though.

Heh. That teaser had the same shot as in the first one minus the pixie. Must be an earlier version.

OK, finally saw this movie.

I'd say it was quite a good movie, with genuinely moving scenes and a nice contrast between fantasy and reality.

That said I think it's overrated. I'd give it a solid 4 stars out of 5 (ie. very good), but perhaps wouldn't tote out the "masterpiece" moniker as many reviewers are giving it.

Why?

1) The character of the stepdad of Ofelia (the little girl) is a little over the top. Very harsh man, but sometimes it seems contrived.
2) Pacing. Some of the scenes (both fantasy and reality) seemed slow, and more drawn out than necessary.
3) Not the most interesting fantasies. The frog was kinda meh. The introduction of the 1st fairy was very nicely done however.

That said, I still recommend this to adult viewers. In fact, it's one of the best movies I've seen this year. I'd even purchase it on hi-def if it came out on HD DVD. Don't take your little kids though. It's far too harsh a movie for small children.

BTW, the teaser is quite misleading.

It was on the film fest circuit many months ago, and started playing in Toronto in December 2006, albeit in limited release.

P.S. I'm not sure it really deserved an R-rating. In truth there were a couple of scenes that were potential R scenes, but the vast majority of the movie wasn't even close. To me it was more like a PG-13 movie with a couple of scenes a bit more graphic than usual.

I left the theater while watching Poltergeist. Dragged my bro and my dad out, and we left.

I think it was during the tree_grabbing_the_kid_from_his_bedroom scene.

I'm better now.

p.s. Poltergeist came out in '82. I saw it in the theater. I was 6 years old?? Shouldn't I have been at home!?

Not a girl, but what about The Shining? Danny Lloyd was 6 when they shot that. Although he never knew he was in a horror movie until a few years later.

I have been itching to see this as I didn't know about it when it was at the Toronto Film Festival.

Where is it playing locally now?

It's from their official website - I assumed that meant it IS only playing in the US right now. If not great - maybe the release here in Vancouver will be sooner.

EDIT: Movietickets.com has it scheduled to open in Canada on January 19th.

In Toronto, it's only playing at the Varsity (regular theatre and VIP theatre) for the time being.

It has been playing there since Xmas.

Yes, I agree. Way over the top. It wasn't that needed to get the point across that he was an homicidal asshole.

Why would the mother seem so oblivious to him being a meany?

I saw Pan's Labyrinth the other day. It is possibly the best movie I have ever seen in my life. Shame it didn't win the Oscar for best foreign language picture, but it won me.

There isn't a weak spot in it and I can't recommend it enough. The soundtrack is amazing as well.

Just. Wow.

Why's it rated R? My wife tends to have R movies because of all the foul language and stuff.

Mostly due to subject matter, theme and the occasional bursts of quite graphic violence. If I recall correctly, there's a BIT of language issues, but they're extremely minor. The dialogue is, overall, pretty tame -- it's a distinct contrast with the actions of, for example, Captain Vidal.

Yeah, the language and most of the film is PG13. Then there are the outbursts of Vidal, which are R.

A masterpiece of a movie. Wonderful how two worlds and two stories are so elegantly entwined. The music score is also a part of the movie, which is a wonderful touch. While not a children's movie - because children wouldn't understand the moral of the movie - it is a movie for every adult.

Really strange it didn't win more awards at the Oscars, but then it did finish second place after the Departed with 3 statues. Not bad for a foreign, low budget, non-hyped independant Spanish/Mexican movie.

I think the best part of the movie was when a peanut gallery sat next to me (some obnoxious mom with 2 kids that wouldn't shut up through the opening credits) blurted out about 5 minutes into the movie, "Oh, it's one of THOSE movies" and walked out.

The audience clapped after they left.

Since I already had the chance to see 300 (yes, I am showing off ), I think this is the movie I am anticipating the most for 2007. If I had only seen the Trailer with no additional Info, I'd have assumed it to be directed by Terry Gilliam.

RH, it's not out on DVD yet (unless overseas..)

I know it is available via other means....but the quality is not the greatest. It is deserving of a dvd viewing.

After posting, it seems that the US release is May 15, and the UK release is March 20th. I may have to go for the UK and pay extra shipping so that I don't have to wait so long.

Just saw it. It is a great, different movie, my thoughts after a good night of sleep.

Did anybody see or read "Tideland" from Terry Gilliam. Pan's labyrinth is very similar…
