Anyone know if I can buy a BTO/custom Mac from the Regent Street/Bluewater Apple stores and take it away then and there?

I understand that may not be possible on certain upgrades but all I want is a stock Mac Mini 1.66 DC but with 2x512MB RAM instead of the standard 2x256. Will they swap the RAM out in-store and just charge me the £50 upgrade price?

I don't really want to wait the 5 days plus 3-7days shipping from the online store for a BTO and I don't want to buy and install the RAM myself and just have to basically chuck out the 2x256 chips(plus this would be more expensive as 2x512's from Crucial will cost me £85 opposed to the £50 upgrade price from Apple).

Before you say it, I don't want 2GB's of RAM in this machine as it is only being hooked up to my LCD tv, off-board soundcard and stereo and I already have a maxed MBP and a Quad G5!

No.

They will charge you for the 256 MB's of RAM + the two 512 MB's. It will come out around $200.

I just went through this with my girlfriend's Macbook.

That sucks then. I can understand it with certain things but...

I may call one of the stores and actually check just to be sure.

Anyone had and experience with the Apple stores in the UK?

Just as an update, confirmed that the Apple store will charge for the complete cost of the new RAM as expected.

I just ordered my mini off the online Apple store and will just have to be patient.

a bit late for you, but i know some of the independent dealers sell Mac's that have been spec'd up for the same price as the BTO - you just need to ring around to see if any of them have got any specials. Also they may of been able to put the extra ram for you at not much over the BTO price by using Kingston ram.
