A friend of mine is wondering what to do with a whole mess (literally speaking) of kids toys - think Happy Meal toys. Is there anything that can be done with such things other than dumpstering them?

DONATE them. Find a shelter-in the LA area there must be scores of them-and donate the toys.
Really, donate these toys so kids without can enjoy them. They won't care that the toys aren't the latest.

Hey, what a coicidence.
My son was in the Emergency Room Friday night -- he fell and knocked a hole in his head, got a couple of staples for his trouble.
The nurse fetched him a toy from somewhere - it was a Happy Meal dalmations toy from a few years ago. Distracted him for about 30 seconds.
But that's what I would recommend. Clean them up (think Lysol) and then donate to a clinic or emergency room. Maybe even one of those emergency rooms that aren't hospital connected (I bet nobody thinks of them).
Or, find a shelter or non-profit thrift shop.
It makes a difference.

He can be fixed -- you can't.
