Small plane makes spectacular landing in downtown Montreal

MONTREAL — One of Montreal's major thoroughfares was turned into an impromptu runway Sunday afternoon when a small plane was force to land minutes from the downtown core.

A Cessna was spotted flying close to the ground as it crossed over the east side of Mount Royal, where hundreds of Montrealers traditionally gather on Sundays to play bongos or simply lounge on the grass.

The plane then lined up with Parc Avenue, one of the city's major north-south arteries, and promptly touched down in front of scores of baffled onlookers.

I've been there. It's a pretty large and busy street, not too far from McGill University.

It's a wide street, but hell, that's both skillful and lucky.

I was just up there last week. I remember that street well. Damn ... can't imagine a plane landing on it, that's for sure.

I could drop a Herc(C-130) on a postage stamp if I had to.

My one major in flight emergency, I managed to (lucked up on is more like it) fly over a mountain strip and land before my plane was completely engulfed in flames.
All men are created equal, but what they do after that point puts them on a sliding scale.

Yeah, it's by a great big park, so people go there and relax. Some of the musician types (or musician wannabes) go there and play their instruments. Bongo drums seem esp. popular for some reason.

it's called Tam Tams. My ex-gf used to go all the time. Since marijuana is legal there they basically dance, play hand drums and smoke pot. Is indeed my idea of a good time.

Well, maybe, but he had no engine power, and managed to avoid all cars and people.

If not skillful, then at least damn lucky.

The father said the plane's lone engine cut out during an aerial tour of the city, and he commended the pilot's skills for giving the precarious situation a happy ending.

“The plane was very stable, even without the engine it was very stable,” the man told all-news channel LCN. “Our pilot was a real professional, no panic, it was strict business.”

Aside from a street sign that was clipped by one of the plane's wings, the landing caused no other damage.

People do it all the time in that park, but don't mistake that for it being legal. It is still illegal to possess marijuana in Canada. And it's even more of a no-no to smoke it in a public park.

There was a move to decriminalize marijuana, but AFAIK that bill is dead, now that the Conservatives are in power.

He should have one for being stupid, don't you check if you have any fuel before you leave an airport.

Nah. It's always more fun to glide. No engine noise to annoy you.

Anyways, the story is that it's likely a engine problem.

lol - IF ONLY pot was legal up here! Canadian law may be somewhat lax compare to the USA and the enforcement may be downright impossible to find at times but we haven't come that far YET.

It's cost about $10K American to have the plane disassembled and transported to a repair facility.
The cause of his loss of power has yet to be determined. Fuel starvation is suspect but a number of things can cause the engine to quit. Carburator ice, moisture in the fuel lines or a catostrophic mechanical failure(swallow a vlave, camshaft, crankshaft fracture).

There'll be no fine for an emergency landing.
If it is fuel starvation, the pilot may become uninsurable for a couple of years.
Or be required to have a flight review before he can get insurance again.
If it was a mechanical failure, I'd be pissed someone rented me a POS.(if it were a rental)
