Definitely. I was looking to replace my Moto V551 this spring and decided to stick with the old dog after looking at their bland options. I wish Apple would get it over with and release the iPhone already.

I laugh in the direction of the retarded phone market in the USA.
I can have any phone I want with any network provider I chose. Or If I really wanted buy a phone independently (although it's really expansive, as you have to pay the full retail cost of the phone up front) and do a network deal separately. Hell I can even swap networks and keep the same phone.

Ya gotta love the FCC and our dismal cell phone situation here in the richest nation on earth. Not. Europe is looking at 4G and beyone while most of us are just now getting 2 1/2 G. But I'll be a happy camper tomorrow when I get my Blackberry Pearl.

With the exception of the providers who don't use GSM, you can do that here in the US, too. Buy your phone at full retail price and Cingular and T-Mobile will be happy to sell you the SIM card and phone service for it. They may not even require as long of a service contract since they're not subsidizing the cost of the phone, either. It's a trade-off. Want cell phone service, but don't want to pay $400-500 for a phone? Sign up for 2 years of service, buy the phone for $100-200, with the understanding that the phone is locked and can't be used by other providers. (Which is why the $25-a-pop unlocking service became so popular).

The problem is that people are so used to the subsidized phones that they think that cell phones are SUPPOSED to only cost about $100-200.

The cool thing is, T-Mobile will be happy to unlock your phone for you after you've been with them for >90 days. Just tell them that you are going overseas for a few months and want to continue using your phone, and they'll email you the codes necessary to unlock it. I don't know if Cingular does the same thing, however. But still, how cool would it be to have a PEBL phone with your Cingular network?

Cingular has good phones but their service is crap. I get 2 or 3 dropped calls PER DAY! It's horrible. And I have their best nation-wide plan too.

works great for me.

I've also got a couple of unlocked phones, and use them both with Cingular, although I could pop a T-Mobile sim card in and be on my way if I was so inclined.

I laugh in the general direction of the smug euro that laughed in this direction!

You can also sometimes get unlocked phones at a discounted price if your town has independent shops that are also authorized service resellers. Here in Philly, I got my K750i w/T-Mobile service at a place in Chinatown that carries a lot of import handsets. They carry all the locked phones for T-Mo (and maybe some other providers), but you can still get $150 off any ol' GSM phone if you get it at the same time as your contract, since the shop gets incentives from T-Mo for signing people up. I know people have achieved similar results in NYC and the SF Bay Area as well.

The Q and the Chocolate SUCK. I haven't used the V, but it's pretty well loved by its users. I almost bought a Chocolate (need an upgrade from my e815) but once I played around with it I knew what a piece of crap it was - it's all flash and no substance.

Plus only their Motorola phones will work with iSync, so that limits the phones a mac user can get anyway.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

dunno why some people have such bad luck with cingular. no dropped calls with them ever, and except when on the underground, always full service.

I've had no problems with Cingular's service either, seems to work the best in my area. Their phone selection does seem headed downhill, though. Probably will improve given a few months time.
