So OK, so I was using my Nano all day at work, used it in my car, walked in and sat it down on the couch next to me. Picked it up and noticed 1/4 of the screen was blank. Odd, since it was working fine all day and absolutely nothing had happened between then and the last time it was fine. It never left my sight.

Strange. OK, so I know the Nano has a year warranty, and I know it was around this time last year that I picked it up. I check my receipt, and it says I bought it on September 9th. Ugh.

If I take this to the Apple store tomorrow, is there any chance that I might get some some wiggle room added to my warranty or are they complete sticklers?

The other bizarre thing is that new iPods come out tomorrow, although, I really didn't want to have to buy one right now. I think my wife would kill me, since we've had a few very expensive months in a row.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

There's definitely a good chance. I'd give it a try.

Tomorrow may be our lucky day. New iMacs, new iPods, free-iPod-with-Mac deal good until four days later…

Yeah, I think you'll probably be ok. Be super polite and ask nicely. I bet they'll swap it.

I got the drive on my old 12" PB replaced for free, 13 months after I bought it. Best of luck.

Resellers usually can't do much (though they may have two days' leniency or so with Apple).

If you deal with Apple directly, they will come through for you. Just don't bitch them out first thing, because they don't strictly owe you anything, and assholism begets assholism.

I called apple 15 hours AFTER my 1 year expired and they said they could do NOTHING. It took months of hassle to finally get them to agree with me.

I've had good luck with a few days- maybe because I didn't plug it in the day I got it to register it?

I'm going to try taking mine back to the mini Apple Store I bought it at. The funny thing is that I'm going to do it on my lunch break and it's going to 100% coincide with the Apple event today. Funny timing.

Anyway, I have the box and the receipt with me, but the receipt says in big letters, Warranty lasts until September 9th, 2007. I think I might be better off just taking the iPod in and playing dumb. I know they can replace them just using the serial number, since my friend got his iPod replaced without any documentation what-so-ever.

The conspiracy theorist in my says that they sent some sort of signal to break my iPod the day before the new ones come out. Curse you Steve!

So yeah, the refurbished iPod the gave me as a replacement doesn't work right either. The backlight doesn't come on. Back to the Apple store I go.

I've got them to replace my iPod mini almost a full month after warranty. I was just very kind and showed no anger. Plus a nice innocent look helped too ( truth was I really just hated the gold look and I wanted blue, plus my battery wasn't lasting very long).

Yeah my iPod Photo stopped working soon after the warrenty was up on it. Apple wouldn't do jack. Said I needed to buy a new drive, mine went bad.

I haven't told anyone since that they should buy an iPod. I expect a $350 device to last more than a year or so.

And this isn't just a single instance. My office is full of HD based iPods that are screwed after normal usage.

Yeah, the HD in my 3G failed after 2 years. I'm never buying another HD based iPod again.

You could always buy a new one for like $20.

My parent's iMac died a few days ago. It was a Rev A G5. After taking a look at it I told my parents it was probably a dead power supply. Keep in mind it's more than a few months out of warranty.

My parents took it to the Apple Store and told the genius what I thought was wrong. The genius told them he'd go ahead and swap power supplies, and if that was the problem he wouldn't charge for labor. He did it, iMac worked again, and he didn't even charge for the power supply (after checking with Apple).

A++ Apple.

Apple Stores in general will probably help you out if the warranty is only expired by a few days. Having said that, if you're going to get a HD iPod, spend a little extra and get AppleCare. You're getting 2 years of coverage for a hard drive, screen, etc. that are getting jostled around and used constantly.
