What is wrong with the Apple Store that it's always going down, anyway? Is it coded by retarded monkeys?

Wow, this thread is twice as redundant with the iTMS is down thread.

But yeah, I figured it'd happen anyway (This thread).

I wish I were any good with graphics.

If I were, I would make an animated gif of an anthropomorphic chihuaua sitting at his computer with his eyes glued to the screen. He'd twitch around like he'd drunk too much coffie, and "OMG! OMG! OMG!" would pop up all over the picture.

Then I'd post it in threads like this.
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

Ok, here ya go.

Sounds like new iPods. It will be also interesting to check out the Airport Express section, as well as for a possible new living room appliance. It seems rather early for the store to go down though, as the media even doesn't start for another 1.3 hours.

Oh and there will be a new desktop Mac, considering my 24" iMac shipped today. j/k

The iTunes Mu.... err... Store went down even earlier, I think around 5 am PST or something like that, 5 hours before the event.

What bugs me about the store going down is the way they say '...will be back within an hour..'.... This is almost NEVER true!

No, that's not what it says actually. It is "will be back within the hour". I'm not a native speaker so I can't tell whether that has another meaning than "within an hour", but I noticed the difference.

I'm not if you are kidding or not but It's actually a legitimate question. I don't know of any other major e-commerce site that has to be taken offline just to add or remove products. I think this would be basic functionality built into any e-store.

No other major e-commerce site has the "flare" or drama that Apple has when releasing new products though either.

I don't think there's any real semantic difference.

As ricky said, its all about the show. There is no technical reason to do it, but it sure does build anticipation. And one of the greatest things Apple does when it comes to PR is build anticipation around its releases. It works.

Bring on the new iPods!

so if Jeeves is correct, then the store should be up in the next 30 minutes since that's "within the hour" won't happen.

Although I'm sure he is, an educated non-native English speaker tends to know just as well. Either you learn a language or you don't.

Well, then I guess I'm not educated by your definition. But thanks for your hubris. It enlightened my day.

I tend to trust a native speaker more when it comes to subtile differences like this.

There are still obscure phrases that would be unfamiliar to a non-native speaker. To me (native speaker), it does sound like "We will be back within one hour from when this was posted" (THE hour). If a shop had a sign on the window, "be back within the hour", i would expect them to take no longer than one hour from the time i saw the sign.
Although we know apple won't open till atleast midway through if not way after the event.

I don't even trust native speaker to write 'they're/their/there' correctly.

'Per say', 'here here' and 'irregardless' are common errors among native speakers, who wouldn't recognize it.

Countless other details. I'd trust native speakers better to explain culture and local geography. That's about it.

If I – as a non-native speaker – would see that sign at 9:30 am, I would have expected the owner to be back by 9:59 am. Within the hour the sign was put up. But I have seen that phrase on the Apple Store only and I know it takes them longer than one hour usually, so I assumed it is a fancy way to say "within hours".

True, I thought of that as well after I posted.

To tell you the truth, "within the hour" just sounds like a stupid phrase to use. It is either the hour (from x:00 to x+1:00) or within an hour. Actually now that I think about it, I seem to remember the Apple store saying "be back soon" whenever they were down. Is there any validity to that?

I just want this damn event to start so I can see what happens. I came straight home from school, however I was a little early and have been sitting at the computer waiting. ONE MINUTE!!!

Dell, it is not being streamed live (except to london for their event over there). If you want to see a play by play, go to either ilounge.com or engadget. Macrumors is using both of them to make one live feed, and that's what my browser is set to right now.

I lied, it was pointed out in the other thread there is a video, but it's only gonna be up after the event (obviously, since there is no video until then!)

I think the new iTunes interface may be hinting towards Leopard.
