Just orderd mine. I know some people will balk at $800 price tag but considering it's full capabilites I think it's fairly priced. I had considered putting together a mini and eyetv system but I think it would be a bit kludgy and still not have all the features of the S3. I would have prefered not to pay $12.95 a month but it is a less than the cost HD satellite and cable PVR solutions available in my area.

I've been waiting for the TiVo S3 for quite a while now, but $800 is too much for me. It's as simple as that. I'm holding back on getting a new HDTV for the same reason. It looks like a great box, though, and one that I'd prefer using over the Cable Company's box.
I have a S1 TiVo with the lifetime sub. TiVo is extending a special offer to people with lifetime units to transfer the lifetime service to an S3 for $200. If I had the money, I would jump at it, but there are more important things I could be spending the $1000 on right now. It's a limited offer, though, and goes away in a few months, so I think I'll miss the boat on that.
If anything, with more and more of the shows we watch appearing on iTunes, we might be tempted to ditch the cable altogether and go with the new thingie from Apple. In which case, as nice as having a TiVo is, it would become unnecessary.
Hey, I wonder how much my S1 is worth now that it can be used to upgrade to lifetime service on a S3?

Agreed. My Series2 works fine and it only cost me $49.

Comcast and TiVo just signed a deal recently. The S3 will be available to rent through Comcast for probably $15/month in the very near future.

I am getting the S3 to record OTA HD on the major networks. The only other options in my area for HD DVR are digital cable or satellite. I do not want to pay $60 to $90 a month for a bunch of channels I'll never watch.

I like gadgets, but wow. There's no way I can afford $800 for the unit plus $199 to transfer my Series 2 lifetime subscription. That's the price of another computer. And yes, Tivo is a computer but I can only use it to watch TV.
Maybe this will force me to stop watching so much TV and just go play more.
