It was bound to happen. I think Dell saw Apple's adoption of Intel processors as a market challenge, and so they needed to spread their tentacles sources out more. Whatever, it's a good thing for PC buyers, and direct competition for HP/Compacrap which already sells AMD-based notebooks. Competition is good for customers in this field.

While Apple is always gunning for Dell, I think Dell has bigger fish to fry than Apple.

This is to remain competitive with HP/Sony/Lenovo across all lines for the long term. Today Intel is up, but in 3 years it could be AMD.

I don't think Dell really cares what CPU is in the box, as long as the box has a Dell logo on the front.

I agree. This has nothing to do with Apple.

It has to do with the fact that AMD has been a more compelling option of late, esp. within the server market. Once the Opteron broke thru, desktops were to follow. If AMD can get good laptops CPUs out, we'll see those sold at Dell too. Diversification is good.

The same applies to Apple actually. They took the first step to go x86, which provides them a more diversified product mix. Not only does Intel give them more and faster options than IBM and Freescale combined, it offers them the potential to use AMD chips in the future.
