iPhone or PPC-6700

Alright, I have a Treo 650 which I find pretty crappy.

Lately I was thinking about getting a Sprint PPC-6700.

But I don't know if I should wait for the iPhone. My issue is this: I am worried that the iPhone will be too 'consumer oriented' and less of a killer PDA. I couldn't care less about MP3s in my phone (or any kind of entertainment).

I need it as a business tool. I need web, email, iCal, IM, and hopefully an SSH client.

Whadaya think? Wait or get the 6700? BTW, are there any 6700 users out there? How's the Mac integration? Is it fast? Stable?

Thanks!!!

I'm pretty sure the iPhone will be very anti-pda also.

I have a ppc-6700 phone and I love it. I came from a treo 600 and the evdo was worth the upgrade for me. I've been debating going to a treo 700p. Don't get me wrong I like the windows mobile platform and I have got so use to multi-tasking on the device but I felt the treo 600 was more stable.

Pros:
EVDO
Touchscreen
Qwerty keyboard
Cheap data plan

Cons:
No official mac support requires third party application
5 way navigation support doesn't work in every app
have to flip out the keyboard to type
Sometimes freezes and must be restared (but hey thats all windows)
external antenna
default web browser isn't that great
low speaker and ringer volume

What apps do you use for Email, IM, Web Browsing, and SSH (if you use SSH)?

Also, when you work with the device - does it feel snappy? I am not talking about download times. I am talking about the OS and user interface. In otherwords, does it feel like a 'new Mac' or a '4-year-old Mac'?

How''s integration with iCal? Eudora?

How's the phone's reception? Sound quality? Mic quality (do people ever complain about not hearing you)?

Thanks!!!

Email
I use the default message program which does email and text msgs.

Web browsing
Pocket explorer which is the default browser

Speed
The device feels snappy but gets extremely sluggish when alot of apps are open.

As far as Ical and eudora I never use those.

Phone quality
Out of 5
Reception 3
Sound quality 3
Mic quality 4

Remember this is a pda first phone second.

Isn't it strange that no company has "got it right"? I have yet to see a phone/PDA out there that is an 'A' or even an 'A-' product. One of the reasons I figured I'd wait for te iPhone is because I know that Steve gets it right. The problem is, unless they come out with a few models, it will most likely be product for college kids rather than what I need.

Although I must say that the 6700 sounds like it would be an improvement over my Treo 650. Thank you for the great info.

Unless you have an infinite amount of time to wait, go for the PPC, because there is no iPhone.

Agreed I've heard rumors about a PPC-6800 in the works as well for the CDMA market.

Choose the non-existant phone. Cheaper service.

There is no iPhone. I wouldnt waste your time on waiting...

I can probably answer anythign you'd like to know about the 6700 though. I absolutely swear by mine and I've found next to nothing that I cant do with it. Just the ability to sync with an Exchange server over the air makes it worth it. Its much better than the Treo. Tons of free software out there for it also. The mail client handles Exchange, three POP accounts plus thousands of text messages for me just fine. Also it works great as a Bluetooth modem for high-speed access anywhere with a signal.

There are more than a few.

Check the PPC-6700 forum at pdaphonehome.com for feedback from actual users.

I am worried about the iPhone because I have a feeling when it launches it will probibly be locked to some carrier. Even if it is not it had damn well be quadband/Edge and not just 900MHz.

On top of that if it just plays MP3's and a run in the mill phone... WHO CARES!?

You can go out today and get a Sony Ericsson that has had years and years of experiance with phones and music. Sony's design is also top notch, the battery life is the best on the market as is the OS.

Whatever Apple comes out with it better be killer as the Sony w950 has a 4 gig drive and it hot as hell and the music software is pretty much exactly like an iPod but it has a wheel on the side instead.

Yes no camera but out of the 10 people I know with camera phones 2 ever use them (Eug being one of them).
