Has anyone else noticed that there seem to be a ton of new people here all of the sudden? I'm all for having new people around and what not, but everywhere I look it seems like the post counts are (largely) in the 1 and 2 digit range...

Or is it just me?

some of us are just discovering it, or re-discovering it. i think yahoogroups focusing on macs and os x have taken a lot of the wind out of bulletin board style sites, but EYE still like this format. many people do not want to DO much and so yahoogroups (where the messages are sent automatically and you can respond via email) is just too irresistable for the masses.

Clearly you don't live in Boston or you would recognize that this coincides with the beginning of the school year and the desecration of all things good and worthwhile by a preponderance of students.

I agree with nonhuman, it's because students just started school, most likely with new macs, and new questions/problems regarding those macs.

There are indeed a lot of newbies. I've been catching tons of 'em with huge sigs, stupid/lame thread titles, etc. Mostly just what happens when someone jumps in without lurking even a little. (I lurked for months before I even set up an account here.)

nonhuman, how is this specific to Boston? I've been innundated by medical school students who have taken over the very far away from main campus parking lot next to MY building for over a month-they're waiting for their more expensive, but quite limited "main campus" parking spaces to open up.

I opt for the Lounge to be hidden until you reach a certain number of posts. Like MacSerialJunkie does it with some of their forums.

It's not specific to Boston, but I've never experienced it to nearly the same degree anywhere else. Come September, this area is just flooded with students and their U-Haul trucks. It's insane.

The best part is that every single year at least one student destroys their U-Haul truck by driving it under a too low underpass (they're all over the city).

Why do they need uHauls? What do they have that's so vitally important that they need that much moving space?

disclaimer: When I went off to college, I packed my Camrey to the brim (beyond me and the friend who was driving it back.)

Hell, I managed to fit three people in my car when I moved into my freshman year dorm. And I carried my lime green iMac on my lap.

Beats me, I packed up my entire life into a single, 5x8 shipping crate.

I can proudly say that I've STILL never found it, and never plan on finding it. Or looking for it. Or clicking on the link that says "Political/War Lounge".

It took me four car trips to move my crap from my dorm room to the house I lived in this summer. Luckily it only took two to get back. Granted, that's a full surround sound system, some huge speakers, a 27" TV, a bunch of computers, a ton of clothes, etc. But still.

Well, I was moving from San Francisco to Boston, so multiple car trips wasn't really going to work.

Besides, you try fitting a full-size sofabed into a Camaro.

Nah, just report them.

If they are new, and they don't know how to behave, bannination will be a self-fulfilling prophecy

Some of us are older, but corrupt file systems required re-registration. My account was "taken over" for a few months by another name. Okay, so not that much older.

There should be some minimum word count for posts too. Forty.

That doesn't work.

I have seen forums that do that, and they display an error message. So people just paste and copy the error message to fill up the post. Looks stupid.

Hi all. I'm new, but old. My previous account had been registered since some time in 2000. But I rarely posted, mostly lurked, and ultimately retired the account. And here I am.

The "Noob as veteran" scenario is possible. I lurked in 99-00, registered in 01, and have been here ever since. In 05 I decided to create this one and permanently abandon my old one.

Frankly tho it is best to hang onto your name as long as possible. Without it, people forget who you are.

what_the_heck, this is my (Oversoul's) other account. Notice the registration date (so correction, 2001 and not 2000), and notice that I apparently never use it? If you're going to judge n00biness by the registration date next to the account one's immediately using, then check your own. Otherwise, don't imply that I'm typing puffery.

1911?!?!? That was before Al Gore was even borneded, so he couldn't have invented the intartubzzez then!

I've been here since April, 2001 (formally), but I lurked for almost a year before I registered.

I actually like some of the fresh questions.

IMHO, it's all about quality... not age.

That being said, some of the enormous sigs have been hilarious. I just don't understand how other forums permit that crap.

Nah, I wasn't saying that you were one of them.

I just thought it was funny that there is a thread about new members, and then you have someone with a brand new nick coming in, saying he's been around forever.

Timing, it's all about timing
