526,000 ThinkPad batteries (made by Sony) are being recalled.

Lenovo Support & downloads - Battery recall

This looks like the end of Sony. Interestingly the affected ThinkPad batteries were sold between February 2005 and September 2006, that means well after problems with the batteries have been known already.

I'd hate to be the guy(s) at the battery plant that are responsible (engineers). If it was in China they'd be shot.

Sony might as well close down their battery operations. This is gonna cost big bucks.

i was kinda thinking the same thing. i mean, first dell, then apple, now lenovo ... this is not like a mom and pop mistake. this is hundreds of thousands (millions?) of batteries.

...and i am wondering if this is gonna affect even more powerbook batteries. mine wasn't in the first or second recall, but wondering if this new slate will make them rething it.

my battery gets awfully hot sometimes, but it has never caught on fire (yet) so i consider myself lucky.

Only by one month. The affected batteries in the Apple machines were sold through August 2006 (link). It's probably the same batteries that caused the problems for Dell and Apple.

Not that Sony doesn't suck, of course...

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

With these ThinkPad batteries, that makes a grand total (so far) of about 6.5 million batteries.

Ouch.

This thing is turning into a MAJOR supply issue, as well, since delivery times on replacement (and new) batteries is now at around four to six WEEKS in some cases.

It's not defective, I just use it a lot. What I was saying was I wished my battery was recalled so I would get a brand new one for free.

Sony Global - Press Release - Sony to Initiate Global Replacement Program for Notebook Computer Battery Pack

Seems like Sony is going to recall those types of batteries for all notebook manufacturers.

Most likely the engineers covered their butt by warning the board of managers about the risks, and the managers chose to ignore it. But they are in Japan, not China. The worst it could happen to them is a bukkake row and gang rape.

So I go to the above linked Lenovo site, enter in the 22-digit battery # and hit "Continue"...nothing happens, the screen simply refreshes. This is the same on multiple computers.

Awesome stuff...well done.

Just quoted myself to add that I talked to a colleague today who noted that Toshiba, and, of course, Sony's own laptops are affected as well.

Grand total so far is over SIXTEEN MILLION batteries, apparently.

This was going to be Sony's first fiscal year in the black in many years.

No longer. This is a global fiasco on a VAST scale.

Double ouch.

Ouch.
