New research shows that the active ingredient in marijuana may prevent the progression of the disease by preserving levels of an important neurotransmitter that allows the brain to function.

Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California found that marijuana's active ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can prevent the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from breaking down more effectively than commercially marketed drugs.

THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer's patients, the researchers reported in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.

The researchers said their discovery could lead to more effective drug treatment for Alzheimer's, the leading cause of dementia among the elderly.

Those afflicted with Alzheimer's suffer from memory loss, impaired decision-making, and diminished language and movement skills. The ultimate cause of the disease is unknown, though it is believed to be hereditary.

Marijuana is used to relieve glaucoma and can help reduce side effects from cancer and AIDS treatment.

Possessing marijuana for recreational use is illegal in many parts of the world, including the United States, though some states allow possession for medical purposes.

Definitely not.

In canada low amounts is ok as is medical usage.

The US is only legal for medical but even then it isn't widely used.

Not true actually. The U.S. Supreme Court, in Gonzales v. Raich, 545 U.S. 1 (2005), struck down state and local law that allowed the use of medical marijuana. Before that, something like eleven states allowed medical marijuana use.

The Court goes about this with, what many think, questionable reasoning. The Court ruled that the federal Controlled Substances Act (which preempts state and local law) is valid within Congress' commerce power because the production of marijuana even for home consumption has a substantial effect on supply and demand in the national market. What this means is that marijuana grown locally and ostensibly "legally" under state law cannot be readily distinguished and will therefore have an impact on pot grown illicitly elsewhere. So, Controlled Substances Act trumps all, and the federal government may crack down on marijuana however they wish.

No, the law does not make an exception for if you don't get caught. "Legal" just means "in accordance with the law." If your actions are not in accordance with the law, they are illegal whether or not anyone sees them.

Controlled Substances in Alphabetical Order

According to the DEA, marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug. Which means it's as dangerous as PCP or heroin. Seems odd, does it not?

You have seen "Reefer Madness", right?

I swear, one time I smoked a bowl and was up all night playing crazy jazz piano.

That devil weed (you know, with its roots in hell!!) is some awfully wicked stuff!
