Ahh... MacAddict.
I was a pretty religious subscriber to it back in the day. I also had thousands of posts on their forums before I had even a hundred here. But I got banned three or four times for a little of this and a little of that, so I eventually stopped going.
Oh well. Too bad a name change isn't going to do much to help the magazine out in a day and age when any content found in it can be seen online weeks earlier and for free.

A lot of magazines are running into that problem.
I liked the CD that came with it back when I was stuck on dialup. It reminded me of my old Apple Soft magazines that came with a floppy.
Oh well, times are a changin'.

Had to laugh at that.
There are 100 reasons I can't remember the last time I picked up a MacAddict or MacWorld. Guess I'm not alone.

MacAddict used to be cool. It's been years since it's been that.

I always found MacAddict's "Macs are kewl PCs are teh Scuk11!11!" tone juvenile and distracting. I guess that Macs *are* PC's now probably had something to do with the name/editorial change

I used to get MacAddict back in the day. the last time I picked up an issue I was shocked at how unprofessional the layout was and how full of mistakes and typos it was.

I liked their back pages. Very cartoony and colorful and unusual (some would say horrible, but I liked the color scheme). It was different than all the other more "professional" Mac magazines-- and I liked that. They also had some pretty good articles exploring different things you could do with your Mac.

Yeah I used to be one too, it was great a while ago, but then they changed editor's and things seemed to go down hill. The last time I picked up an edition, I couldn't believe how thin it was. I think the web is killing all of these technology type magazines. Why should I buy the mag when I get all of the same info on the web for free.

I do wonder if they're affiliated with the German magazine of the same name...

Mac Lives Culture
MacAddict/Future US may want to consider catering to more of an international audience along the lines of MacDirectory magazine. Exploring the lives of creative people using Macs to develop their visions. Interviewing the likes of Gene Munster about how investors should value the parts of Apple and what is a reasonable premium with and without Steve Jobs. Meet with Apple Directors, Al Gore and others, to explore their aims and what other business interests may affect judgements regarding Apple. How could Jobs minimalist style transfer to an Appleesque design for office, home and ergonomics. Imagine the expanded advertising pool willing to influence and fulfill the MacAddiction and the resulting ad revenues generated to bring more pages to us every month. As MacAddict has aged so has its base and with age prospered financially; bringing along their youthful exuberance with an ability to fulfill desires beyond their means a decade ago. Isn't that what we MacAddict readers really want, more and better with fun?

I once subscribed to MacAddict, but they lost their edge.
IMHO, there could be a very cool magazine out there... that provided some great content, but they seem fixed on offering what can easily be viewed online.
What I really liked:
- When the hacked together systems and gave good photo detail of what and how they did what they did.
- I would like if they offered cool stuff on their CDs like desktop patters, cool screen savers, etc.
- Interviews with creative types
- Detailed reviews of how designer "cribs"
ETC ETC. All the stuff regular joe internet can't provide.

I was once a subscriber to all three - MacWorld, MacUser and MacAddict. Now I'm a 6 month after buying a new Mac subscriber to MacWorld.
There just isn't any reason to have them. I can get the info right now, online. They need to adjust themselves to deal with the new world.

For me the great thing about MacAddict was the damn CD that had those "huge" game demo's and OS7 updates that were a whooping 80-150 megs.
Then high speed internet came along and nobody needed MacAddict for the CD anymore. To make matters worse the CD no longer came standard with the magazine (in certain or all cases AFAIK).
To me it also never grew up.
P.S. My letter was published in issue #2 and I was tickled at the time.

I think I'm in the same boat as a lot of people. I used to subscribe, as it was great to get new programs and such when I had no internet, but now that I'm on high speed, most/all of the same material is available for free. I did like their April fools issues though, they were always fun.
I also got a subscription of MacWorld when I bought my iBook and chose the online format, but when they saw that I never downloaded the issues, they switched me to the paper format, which I never read either...

I like MacAddict when I want to laugh, but as an informative magazine, they are horrible. Niko always makes me laugh. I really enjoy their hacks though. Their iPod hack article was sweet.

I bought every issue of MacAddict since the very first one, and I stopped subscribing in early 2005. Personally, I think MacAddict lost the wonderful edge that it once had.
If the new MacLife magazine is better than MacAddict has been, I will subscribe to it.

I loved those mags, Macaddict and Macworld back when MacOS 7.5 and MacOS8 were HOT... before the INTERNET, when modems didn't have 56k. The macaddict CDs were the best... I still remember the original Myth Demo that came out in one of their christmas issues...played it over and over and over. Good times. R.I.P.

I remember the days of getting Apple OS upgrades on a MacAddict CD. 8.1 was the last one. Then Apple put the cabosh on it.

If these magazines really want to survive in the age of broadband, they'll need to consider killing their print magazines and start charging for access to their websites. Why pay for paper that's weeks out-of-date when you can get up-to-the-minute news and commentary for free?

Either that or they need to write informative articles that help you use your computer. Reporting the news in periodical format is suicide in today's world of "Let's watch Jobs' keynote from this morning on QuickTime!".

At the forum? No. I wouldn't pay for the privilege of posting at a Mac forum. But if there were no print magazines, and no free Mac news sites, I could see myself shelling out $15/year for access to MacCentral or something.
I wouldn't like it, and would whine incessantly about it, but I would probably do it.

Like many others, I had a subscription to MacAddict. They're tone and writing fit well in the days of yore, when the Mac vs. PC argument was in it's prime. They started a magazine about Macs when it seemed as though the Mac would be dead within a year.
I enjoyed a lot of the articles. The iBot (and the fact that the iBook that was attached to it disappeared) the obscure rants and raves, and occasionally they included cool little office movies they'd made. It was a fun magazine.
I can't tell you what happened to them. I started getting MacAddict around 15... Like others, I don't think it was them that changed. I just grew out of it. Magazines are disappearing.
