I replaced my 120mm fan in my G4, and I used the 4-pin power connector and plugged that into the G4.

The fan I replaced (stock fan) was plugged in using a molex(I think that's what it's called) connector, which is now unused.

This new fan has an LED (it was free from a friend), and my old fan has been pretty loud since forever.

The LED is working, the fan is spinning. Am I good to go? I don't want to fry my computer.

Thanks The Lounge®

It sounds good. It might be a good idea to keep an application like temperature monitor open, but if the computer gets too hot it should shut itself down anyway.

It sounds like you've got it set up correctly. I replaced the fan in my G4 tower a couple of years ago because it made such a loud whine.

86 deg. F at the moment, holding steady. I'm gonna swap out my PS fan in the next week or so, a bit more complicated as I understand.

Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah, be careful when you're digging around in the PS. I had to fix a fan in one of my PSs a few weeks ago, and it was pretty straight forward, I just refrained from jamming the screwdriver into every component in the PS.

Just keep an eye on the temp. See if there is some automatic alert function in case it goes too hot.

Standard fans run on 12Vdc. If you were to plug a 12V fan into a 5V source it would not run normally and you would see that right away. Further, the LED is a giveaway: it's got a dropping resistor to make sure that the right voltage (usually around 1.5V) is applied to it-if you plugged the fan into the wrong voltage, it would either not light the LED very brightly or it would already have failed.

But please post a picture of the "Molex" connector you're talking about. If it's the one that's about 1 1/4 inches wide with four pins (and yellow, red, and 2 X black wires), that's a standard drive power connector. If it's about 3/8 of an inch wide (and the wire colors may not be standardized) then it's likely a fan power connector. If it is white and the kind that goes on a set of exposed pins, it could be a floppy drive power connector..

Please make sure that you keep the rotational directions the same.

You don't want to replace an out-blowing fan with one positioned to pull air in.

The important question is: is the LED blue, green, red, or another color?

Installing the fan:

This fan has a three-speed switch that lets you choose between quiet, performance, or maximum cooling.

1. The TriCool Series Fan comes equipped with a 3-pin power connector. It also includes a 4-pin power connector adapter (installed) with power pass-through feature. To connect to a motherboard header, remove the adapter and use the 3-pin connector. To connect to your power supply, leave the adapter attached and plug the 4-pin connector into an available connector. You may plug another device into the other side of the adapter connector and power it, so you don't lose a power plug with the Pro Series Fan.
2. The TriCool Series Fan supports fan speed monitoring through the 3-pin connector. If you choose to connect the Pro Series Fan to your power supply but your motherboard supports fan speed monitoring, you may connect the signal wire adapter (3-pin connector with only one wire) to your motherboard header. The fan speed signal wire does not need to be connected for the Pro Series Fan to function properly.
Note: The minimum voltage to start the fan is 5V. We recommend our users to set the fan speed to High if you choose to connect the fan to a fan control device or to the Fan-Only connector found on some of Antec’s power supplies. A fan-controlled-device regulates the fan speed by varying the voltage to it. The voltage may start as low as 4.5 V to 5V. Connecting a TriCool set on Medium or Low to a fan-control device may result in the fan not being able to start. The already lowered voltage from the fan control device will be further reduced by the TriCool circuitry below 5V.

Specifications:
Size: 120 x 120 x 25.4 mm
Rated Voltage: DC 12V
Operating Voltage: 10.2V ~ 13.8V

========================

The old stock fan had one of these two wire deals:

The new one has that connection(but 3 wires) plus the larger 4-pin connector, and I hooked up through the 4-pin. Here it is lit up:
