The phones themselves are pretty ugly and the palm OS is also horribly dated.

wtf? Apparently "$199 with a contract". Who pays that? I got the new Sony Ericsson CyberShot phone, with 3.2 megapixels and 3G, for free with a contract from 02 here in the UK. Do people in the US still pay for their handsets? And does that thing really have a VGA camera? I didn't know they still made those? I've been using megapixel cameraphones for about 2-3 years now... I know the US used to lag behind in mobile tech but thought it was catching up... was I wrong?

My current contract is up in february and I've been thinking about getting a phone/pda type deal.
If this one is crap, what is the best one out there? I've been out of the PDA world for a long time. I'm completely out of the loop.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

So basically, they added color. That's about it. Prettyful colors. Wow.
Then again, that's about all Apple did to the new Nano. But it has one element that this object lacks: good design.

It's time for me to get a new phone, and I want a smartphone/pda perhaps.
I'm on Cingular, and this is what I want:
Bluetooth
WiFi
QWERTY
MP Camera
I can get the Cingular 8125 (HTC), which is on it's way out. It will be replaced by the 8525. They have a crap camera that claims 1.3MP but is just awful. The 8525 will be hellish expensive when it comes out.
The Treo 680 has only bluetooth and qwerty on my list. It's not much more than a new form-factor'd 650. There will also be a Treo 750 of some sort coming out on Cingular in the next two months or so, and it too will not have WiFi.
Nothing awesome for me at the moment. I may have to settle for a phone-phone. Get it on the cheap, and wait for the new dopeness to come.

I just want a cell-phone that has a decent calenadar, addressbook, notepad, with good data entry. Can you suggest something other than a Treo?

I don't see the appeal of the Treo's. The Palm OS is so old, dated and overly simple, the hardware is bla and bulky.
Blackberries are much better with their recent hardware as is phones such as Nokia's or Sony Ericssons that use Symbian OS which has something like 75% of the smartphone market when palm has 5%.
Honestly the Palm OS/treo's are the windows of the smartphone market.

You answered your own question. I don't need Aqua, transparency, or whatever you consider not "old and dated" when someone in the street gives me a phone number. I just want to get the data in there as simply and as easily as possible. It's not an interface that you use constantly for hours at a time - aesthetics are nice, but not at the expense of efficiency.
What is it that makes a Blackberry or Symbian so appealing? I don't send email on the go, so a Blackberry is out of the question.

I am not talking about the look of the OS, that is what themes are for.
I had a newton, 3 actually. The OS on the first one was more intuitive and allowed better customizing that a Palm today.
The Palm OS is so simple and inflexible I couldn't stand it and sold mine after a year.

You were wrong. We're still way behind. Just about the only recent mobile device we got "on time" was the RAZR and its 4-letter siblings PEBL, ROKR and SLVR.
Frankly, mobile telephony in the USA is a disgrace.

While I agree that the Newton was far more advanced than any other PDA released since then, I never really found myself needing to customize a Palm that much. What do you want to customize?
