Hi! Check out the exciting New 7 Wonders of the World campaign, the world's first-ever global vote.
I just voted for my favorite 7 of the 21 finalists that are competing
- go to www.new7wonders.com to pick your favorite monuments and vote.
... be part of the making of history!
===========================
The multimedia campaign to choose the New 7 Wonders of the World is in its final stage.
This is the biggest global vote ever to have taken place. Millions of people have already voted for their favorite "wonder." Numerous milestones have already been reached on a journey across the Internet, television and the world's media. This journey will reach its pinnacle on July 7, 2007 - 07.07.07, when the world will discover which monuments have been named as the New 7 Wonders of the World.
On January 1, 2006, the New7Wonder Panel of Experts, chaired by the former head of UNESCO, Prof. Dr. Federico Mayor, short-listed those nominations with the most votes received by the end of 2005. The top 77 choices have been narrowed down to just 21 finalists, which are the focus for the final year of voting.
On 07.07.07, the world will learn which of the Earth's treasures will stand in history alongside the Ancient 7 Wonders of the World.
Half of all net revenues raised by the New7Wonders campaign will be put towards restoration efforts worldwide.

===========================
"Our Heritage is our Future"
The "New7Wonders Foundation" was created in 2001 by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber, with a mission to protect humankind's heritage across the globe.
The initial stages of the New 7 Wonders campaign were financed by Weber himself, aided by a small number of committed N7W Members. You, too, can join these members, who remain firmly committed to the project and its aims to this day.
All N7W members have the right to a listing on the N7W Memorial Wall.
Fifty percent of all net revenue raised by the New 7 Wonders Project is to be used to fund restoration efforts worldwide. One such project is the mission to recreate the giant Bamiyan Buddha statue in Afghanistan, which was featured in the Swiss Pavilion along with the New 7 Wonders project at the 2005 World Fair in Japan.
The Foundation, which is based at the Heidi-Weber-Museum in Zurich, Switzerland (an architectural landmark in itself, as the last building designed by renowned architect Le Corbusier), is now well advanced in its aims, with many milestones already reached.
Now, the N7W campaign is in its most exciting, and crucial, stage.
At the end of 2005, the N7W panel chose 21 candidates from the top 77 nominees that had earned the most votes, and these 21 are now in the final stage of the competition. The official N7W 21 finalist candidates were announced by the panel's President, Prof. Federico Mayor, on January 1, 2006 in Zurich.
The final round of voting for the New 7 Wonders will continue throughout 2006 and half of 2007. Then, on July 7, 2007 -07.07.07, the dream of the N7W initiators will become a reality as the globe joins together to celebrate the New 7 Wonders of the World, as chosen by the world's population using modern communications technology.
You can join the N7W Society now. Become an official part of this dynamic community and support this historic project.
... be a part of the making of history !

1) Pyramids of Giza (the last of the original seven)
2) The Easter Island statues (to this day, we're still not sure how or why these were built)
3) Stonehenge (We think we know why this was built, but not how)
4) The Great Wall of China (one of only two manmade structures visible from space, and the other one is only visible because of the huge frickin light at the top).
Three abstentions: while the other finalists are certainly impressive buildings, I believe there are others which better merit Wonder status. Namely, I'd add the Panama Canal, Aswan High Dam, and the Trinity test site.

Niagara falls, Great wall, Pyramids, Stonehenge, Easter Island statues, Acropolis, Mt. Rushmore.
Maybe even the ISS.
The 7 wonders should be either natural or man-made places/things of epic proportions that rival even today's technology imho.

Pft, Panama Canal maybe? I could go with the Statue of Liberty, it's such a universally recognized symbol.

Can You See The Great Wall of China from The Moon?
For some reason, some urban legends tend to get stated and never disappear. This legend even appears as a erroneous Trivial Pursuit question. The legend? Many are familiar with the claim that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from space or from the moon with the naked eye. This is simply not true.
The myth of being able to see the Great Wall from space originated in Richard Halliburton's 1938 (long before humans saw the earth from space) book Second Book of Marvels said that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from the moon.
From a low orbit of the earth, many artificial objects are visible on the earth, such as highways, ships in the sea, railroads, cities, fields of crops, and even some individual buildings. While at a low orbit, the Great Wall of China can certainly be seen from space but it is not unique in that regard.
However, when leaving the earth's orbit and acquiring an altitude of more than a few thousand miles, no man-made objects are visible at all. NASA says, "The Great Wall can barely be seen from the Shuttle, so it would not be possible to see it from the Moon with the naked eye." Thus, it'd be tough to spot the Great Wall of China or any other object from the moon. Furthermore, from the moon, even the continents are barely visible.
Regarding the origination of the story The Straight Dope's pundit Cecil Adams says, "Nobody knows exactly where the story got started, although some think it was speculation by some bigshot during an after-dinner speech in the early days of the space program."
NASA astronaut Alan Bean is quoted in Tom Burnam's book More Misinformation...
"The only thing you can see from the moon is a beautiful sphere, mostly white (clouds), some blue (ocean), patches of yellow (deserts), and every once in a while some green vegetation. No man-made object is visible on this scale. In fact, when first leaving earth's orbit and only a few thousand miles away, no man-made object is visible at that point either."

1. For sure.
2. Read Heyerdahl. We know how, but not why.
3. Have you heard the thing about Stonehenge and fertility worship? Freaky.
4. I think the visible from space thing is urban legend. But I can't link to it right now. Thanks to Eug for the Cecil link. I've read that Al Bean quote before too.

That's seriously one of the hottest women I've ever seen. All I had to google for was "hot french news" and she was the first link, Melissa Theuriau. Got to say I'd watch her time spot every day if it was broadcast in the US, and I don't speak French. Thanks for my new favorite eye candy.

My votes:

Acropolis

Chichen Itza

Great Wall

Machu Picchu

Petra

Pyramids of Giza

Taj Mahal
If the Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House is still around for the 3007 election I'll consider voting for them. Right now they are not very wonderus.

The historic 7 world wonders were considered impossible or at least astonishing technical marvels of the time.
The Autobahn was a good idea, but certainly not a mind-boggling technical feat.
The Statue of Liberty is not nearly as technologically impressive as the Rhodos Colossus was, or the pyramids of Gizeh. It's important, it used to be a symbol of what once made America great, but a Wonder of the World it is not.
