Okay... I'm no accountant... and certainly not a businessman/entrepreneur.. but here goes.
I was just checking out the figures for Apple's 4th quarter. They sold 1.61 million Macs. And their net profit was $546 million. They also stated that they ended the fiscal year with $10 Billion in CASH. With my limited understanding of things... that's pretty good.
We can debate how expensive Macs are to PC's but that's not really my point. It doesn't seem to me that there is much of a difference anymore between them (cost-wise). But if Apple is raking in the cash hand-over-fist, why not drop the prices a bit so even more people will buy their products. Simple (and maybe even flawed) math tells me that if they had dropped the price of each Mac by $200, they would have still had a net profit of $224 Million. That seems respectable.
I know all those profits allow them to reward their employees/shareholders... and gives them plenty to work with in terms of research and development. But could the reduction in price (and hopefully increase in user base) utlimately be a better pay-off than short term profits?
What do you all think?
