There are plenty of people out there who were scared by LOTR or they found it too violent.

Peter Jackson f*cked it up. The movies suck. So in that sense, yeah, it's pretty damn scary how much those movies sucked.

I'm going to guess that any movie made about Lord of the Rings would f*ck it up.

I was kind of scared at Gimley, he kept on making these funny faces.. Plus, he's a gnome.. or a midget, or some sort of elf.

I thought it was a bit too violent, but it certainly wasn't scary violence. It was needless violence.

In some people's minds. I thought Peter Jackson did a great job of adapting the books to screen.

Someone could've made an awesome movie. Ridley Scott, maybe. Anyone who casts Elijah Wood and Agent Smith needs to be shot. He also botched the story completely and made unnecessary changes that wouldn't 've effected the movie plot-line at all. Then after having to be punished by King Kong, it became quite obvious Peter Jackson is really just Uwe Boll with a $400 million budget.

I'm not sure about Agent Smith as Elrond, but I couldn't think of anyone better for Frodo than Elijah Wood.

Can you give any examples of how this was? I mean, I'll agree that not every change was absolutely necessary, but that doesn't mean they weren't good ideas (due to the difference between books and movies). The only one I can think of off the top of my head that seemed stupid is the inexplicable 180 on Faramir's character. Oh, and Arwen. But I guess that was a marketing concession.

Thank you. I absolutely hated the movies. He tried to dumb down something that morons don't deserve.

So I wasn't the only one wishing that Frodo and his turd burglar sidekick would get torched on Mount Doom? My God the third movie became painful to watch! And the Faramir change was pointless as well. But I enjoyed the movies for the most part.
Scary? Pfft. My 5 year old daughter loves 'em.

I haven't read to Faramir's part in the books yet. What is the 180 that you guys are talking about?

And, oh yes...I voted for "so scary that I didn't want to watch the other two" just because it looked lonely. The movies weren't scary at all, which makes me wonder about this thread....

Everything to do with the battle for Minas Tirith? How about not breaking down the city gates with a bunch of goofy giants tumbling through, but arch-enemies Gandalf and the Lord of the Nazgul symbolically meeting under the ruined gate?

Or King Theoden's glorious charge into battle in the book – the old king shining like the sun, killing everyone like a monster - and then his fatal betrayal by his beloved horse, the proverbial stab in the back for the horse king?

Or the useless huge oliphants and buddy wasisname sliding around on the trunks like a moron?

Sigh. I shouldn't get started. I'm too young to have blood pressure this high.

In the books, Faramir knows Frodo has the ring but refuses to give in to its temptation like his brother. In the movie, Faramir is all like "ZOMG RING GIMME GIMME SO I CAN SHOW MY DADDY!"

Basically, the book's Faramir was a kind and steadfast fellow, while the movie's Faramir was unstable and not particularly different from Boromir.

What are you smoking? At first he's tempted, and then wisdom gets the better of him, and he sends frodo on his way, all the while knowing that his father would be angry with him.

next movie....

Denethor: "You sent the ring of power into MORDOR in the hands of a WITLESS HALFLING!!!"

I don't know what you're saying. You're 180º wrong!

Yes, in the movie, after pointlessly torturing Gollum and forcing Frodo and Sam to bring the ring back to Gondor, Faramir finally does something sensible. And in the book, wisdom never has to get the better of him, because he never lets the ring have any power over him in the first place. Similarly, in the book, Faramir is the only one who isn't susceptible to the Ringwraiths' mind**** powers, if I recall.

We had a friend of ours go to the second one with us - she's a woman in her
thirties and was reduced to a terrified, crying, blubbering mess by the thing.

She says she doesn't dare see the last one and doesn't dare see any of the
extended editions.

She said "I need to see the last one to see how it ends, but I want to see it
on a cheap black and white TV with a small 2" speaker". The larger-than-
life visuals and 6 channel sound made it too real for her.

Her favorite movie is the muppet movie. Heh.

Not even a little. I'd read all the books (finally, in my 40s) and I knew the basic plot, even if Jackson and company felt it necessary to jack around with the story here and there. I thought that on the whole they did a great job.

I though Kong was great too; it was, as Jackson intended, a modern production of what Cooper did in the 1930s. And the visual quality was stunning.

And you cannot revoke anyone's license, Movie Police; you don't have one yourself!

His "magic birdie thingys" are the Eagles, and they are independent players. They like Gandalf because he's helped them out. And the moth was just a messenger (in both directions).

This is why I started this thread. To see if there are others out there. Fortunetaly, thanks to you i've learned that the person because of whom I started this poll is not the only one out there who doesn't dare see any more LOTR because of their reaction to the first one (or the second one, whatever).

We were watching it on my 23" ACD with the volume about as loud as it can go without ringing your ears.
