In the atheist world, Sunday is the day you do homework due on Monday.

Sunday is a school night, it's the night before monday, which is a school day, correct?

Friday and saturday nights would be the nights the kids can stay up later, because they have no school the next day.

Parents over here in Taiwan would certainly have to change those settings: most kids are in cram schools until 21:30 and then have to do their homework until about 00:00 everyday.

Yup, we do

(No, actually, we had lots of weekend homework, and still do. I think it’s just those silly commie Norwegians )

Sunday through Friday is the school week in Israel.
Perhaps the ‘school night’ option is done differently if you choose Israel as your location?

Where do you choose your geographical location in the OS?

Time zones are mostly longitudinal and don't reflect cultural differences.

For instance Hong Kong is on Beijing time, but with totally different working days.

That is true, but regardless of that you pick a location, longitudinal and latitudinal, in Date & Time. You can pick Hong Kong or Beijing there for example. So your Mac knows where it is.

Either way, it still needs work.

If you're going to an orthodox Jewish school in Brooklyn, you might be living in the United States, but still have different school days.

All they need is a "Set school nights..." button which brings up a dialog with seven checkboxes.

The OS shouldn't just determine your geographical location and what days you attend school based on what time zone the computer is set to.

Someone may be attending a swiss school in Beijing etc.

The best bet would be to let you configure it directly.

Edit : Just made the same point as analogika, I type too slowly.

Some schools here have Fri/Sat off and some Thurs/Fri, some only Fri. A school night depends on your culture.

if the kid has a computer in his room, it's kind of nice to know that he won't be getting up out of bed again at 2:30 a.m. to go fight some weird overlord with his WoW-buddy from Minnesota.

a) Because instead of them going onto your nerves you want to spend a nice evening with your spouse.
b) If they haven't slept enough they will be crotchety all day during the family weekend excursion.
c) They need to stay used to getting up early since there's school again next monday.

I take it they're not sleeping in, either?

Well, different ages have different needs.

Few kids under the age of 7 sleep in later than 7:30 a.m.

Yeah - they managed to get a few other Gulf cities but not Dubai with by far the largest number of Mac users. In any case my Mac is always set to GMT to make things easier when I travel since Entourage and iCal can't seem to handle time zone changes.

If I have my clock set to Dubai and make an appointment in ICal for next month at 0900 in San Francisco, then fly to SFO and change my clock, all my appointments change too - useless, So I am always on GMT.

My guess is that they'll have to make this setting changeable by locale. For example, unless I'm mistaken France gives students Wednesday off instead of Saturday. In Japan, Saturday is a half-day of classes: only Sunday is a total day off. There are other regions with other timings as well.

You know that you can enable time zone support in the iCal advanced preferences? Obviously you would have to first switch to San-Francisco's time zone before entering an appointment at 9 o'clock there.
