Anyone know anything about these types of documents. We're fairly young at 35, but starting to accumulate retirement/investment funds, real estate, etc. It's just my wife and I, no kids. We figure it is time to get a few things in order, just in case. Are there reputable DIY kits for these types of documents if they are simple or is it advisable to always go out and hire an attorney. How do you find a good one at a reasonable price?

Have a consultation with an estate attorney. It should cost much and they could point you in the right direction.

We've had 2 wills and 2 living wills drawn up by an attorney for about $300. A good source is to ask your bank or accountant. They deal with lawyers and have a good network. Or, you can also ask parents and friends who have used legal services.

You need an attorney if you estate is complicated. Also, with an attorney you get piece of mind knowing your bequests will be done right and will be enforceable.

For your bank and investment accounts, you should establish a 'named beneficiary' with your banking institution. If you do this, when you die, the money goes directly to your beneficiary with no taxes or probate. This is much better than willing someone your money - if you do it through a will, in order to get the money they will have to put your estate in probate and deal with estate taxes etc.
