Ok, with the public announcement that Vista is going to be hitting the stores in January how many folks here are going to buy a copy?

When apple introduced boot camp, I was surprised by the number of mac owners who enthuisatically embraced it. It seemed in stark contrast to all of the posts about peecees and winblows that have been bantered about in the past.

Nonetheless, I'll be one getting it. There's personal and professional reasons for the purchase. Some software I need is only available under windows and since purchasing my Macpro I've held off on buying xp since I knew vista was getting close.

As an aside, I think the move to intel really helped apple and increased sales. Also by moving to the intel platform we now can have these types of discussions

Is Vista succeptable to all of that adware and spyware?

My copy of Virtual PC is now riddled with it when the copier people installed DocTransform on Friday.

I have to administer 58 copiers in 28 different buildings and it's now incapable from all the malware.

I have Spysweeper installed, but it merely bypasses it.
Shut up and eat your paisley.

I was all over XP because it was a giant leap from 9x and worked much better with gaming than 2k did. I could care less about Vista.

I would like to use Vista when it comes out-- since I like the flexibility of two operating systems, but it would be complicated. First of all, it would likely be another $200 or more for the upgrade-- and since it require more space on my hard drive that means I would have to start over with bootcamp. I think I'll just do it all at once when leopard comes out. I'm hoping for a parallels like utility within that new OS, but I'm not sure Apple wants to step on those toes. Might be just a more advanced form of bootcamp which still requires a reboot.

I have RC1 running under parallels right now for fun. Definitely not going to buy it, as I have no reason to.

I've been running RC1 here at work for a while. I am sure my boss will buy me a copy when the final comes out and because of that I'll use it.

Would I buy it for myself to install on my Mac? Not a chance.
I have not done anything in Vista that has made me stop and go "wow, Microsoft did well."

If I was a fulltime PC user, I'd probably upgrade because I like the latest and greatest, but for Bootcamp/Virtual PC, I have absolutely no desire to upgrade.

No. I'd take a free copy if it fell in my lap.

I had RC1 for a while, but the graphics drivers it uses for my MacBook are terrible, so gaming was out of the question. So I switched back to XP for the time being. When/if I can get a free copy of Vista through my university, then I'll reconsider upgrading, depending on driver support (and whether Boot Camp officially supports it by then).

If you have Windows 2000, there's really no reason until somebody starts releasing programs you need that only run on Vista.

This PowerBook G4 is my only computer. No Vista for me.

Maybe one day when I get a new Macbook Pro...in another year or so.

I used Vista RC1, and I was really annoyed at how many times I had to authenticate, even for doing miniscule tasks. If this is their way to thwart viruses/trojans/spyware - count me out.

I know OS X will ask for authentication, but not nearly as often as Vista tends to do.

Gaming was in the question with the GMA950?

I hate that so much. No matter what I want to do I have to authenticate.

I plan on it. I still have my G5 iMac, but I picked up a 17" HP dv8000 for a grand and it's a great laptop. I have XP and Fedora Core 6 on there. I used Vista for about 10 minutes and liked it enough to plan on buying a copy. I think just for the sole reason of how it looks. XP is sooooooooo damned dated.

That has always been Windows' problem — Microsoft can't find a happy medium between giving the user God Mode and requiring him to authenticate every other keystroke. Both cause problems, because either the user chooses to use it in a terribly insecure operating mode or he gets so used to giving away his username and password that authenticating becomes mindless (and thus pointless) anyway.

I have it turned off and there aren't anymore of those obnoxious moments when the screen darkens and you have to OK/Cancel your way out of it.

I've embraced boot camp because it has eliminated the last hurtle for many people considering Apple hardware.

That's fine and all, but then your account is unprotected is it not?

It's as unprotected as it is in XP, I'd guess.

I haven't seen any positives to using the UAC. All I noticed was that I had to OK about 3 times to do simple things.

Not serious gaming of course, but it literally crashed every time I ran any game (even the 3D Chess game!). Meanwhile, XP can play Half-Life 2 or the Sims 2 at full resolution with most effects turned on. It's purty!

And of course I turned off UAP. Obnoxious and useless, in my opinion, though I understand the (poorly-implemented) goal.

EDIT: I also noticed that the Apple Brightness program (the one that runs in the Task Bar) won't work unless you turn off UAP. Silly, huh?

SO, then Vista The SUPERIOR product is NO MORE SAFE than XP, it's PREDECESSOR?

UNLESS you want to AUTHENTICATE EVERYTIME you want to do anything MINISCULE, like CHANGING SIMPLE SYSTEM PREFERENCES.

Sorry for the emphasis, but I felt it was needed.

Ok, I don't know what to tell you guys.

I just installed Vista via bootcamp. Build 5840, very close build to RTM.

This is what I think of Vista:

WTF happened to 'ease of use'?!?!?! EVERYTHING seems to be way more complicated than it should be compared to XP. In every Application it seems you have to drill down through 3 or more levels of contextual menus to get to any common shortcut/action. Come on!!! This is BS! And on that note, you actually have to click on the 'organize' button - Layout CM Item - Menu Bar, just to get a friggen menubar. This is going to totally confuse new users. It's like everything is hidden.

Also, Vista is filled with Tons of annoying visuals. Every action has some fancy effect. Why?

I could add a lot more of the annoyances I've faced so far, but quite frankly there are too many.

I hate this thing, really truly hate it already. Leopard hopefully wont backtrack on ease of use like Windows Vista has.

UGH!

Just more proof that Microsoft simply doesn't "get it." They're completely void of flash, so then they go overboard when everyone compliments Mac OSX's aesthetic appeal. Microsoft has never been about practicality, and it's even further off the mark when it comes to design.

They'll never learn - I'm convinced of it.

My PC is 6 years old (the one I'm using). But even though it's that old, it runs WinXP pretty fast still. So upgrading to a new OS that is sure to slow down my "already-upgraded" computer just wouldn't make any sense.

Instead, I think i'd rather wait for two things before i sacrifice the hard-earned green things in my wallet: 1. Vista comes pre-installed on my new computer purchase and 2. Vista has gone through at least one Service Pack.

Don't bully me, I got an Uzi... HOO-HAH!
