Well, just got back from Wendys. They Hosed up the order AGAIN. I can't beleive they hosed up the order after repeating it to us before producing the order. I guess that "English as a third language" thing is a joke. I hope the fast food owners keep hiring stupid managers who hire illiterate foreigners to waste the resources and give away food and chase the customer base away.
They have recently been putting CHEAP cheeses and toppings on their specialty burgers that must have Dave Thomas spinning like a lathe in his grave. if they monitarily punish the managers of the fast food loints maybe it will change. They already charge 10-15 times the true value of the food for their stuff anyway, so cutting the managers salary in half, and then shopping the place every week or so to check up on 'em might be the way to go.

While I agree with you that a lot of fast food places screw up the order, the manager may or may not be at fault. Unfortunately fast food workers are harder to find than janitors...Getting employees that show up is difficult enough, let alone finding ones that do a good job.
A lot of places I go to in the midwest, more than 1/2 the staff speaks bad english or next to no english. Not to start a political debate at all, but a majority of us aren't interested in working these kinds of postions for the crappy wages that are offered.
I was recently talking to a friend of mine who is an IT worker for a huge national restaurant chain. They can't even find people to wait tables anymore, let let alone some place like McDonals or Wendy's...It's work that no one wants anymore. Bottom line is that we're spoiled, and I'm not judging, I'm as spoiled as well as the next guy, maybe more so...
I just check more order before rolling or eat inside...

It happens with native English speakers all the time as well. These people fill dozens of orders an hour and often mix them up, and it's a crappy, low-paying job so they're not exactly motivated to put out 100% effort. Just check your order and if it's wrong tell them.

You get what you pay for? I disagree. A sit-down restaurant costs more because of wait staff, variety of food, prepared when ordered, and customers stay longer reducing the throughput of customers.
Expecting fast food staff to prepare your order properly in a timely manner is well within the price you pay for it. I agree part of the problem is kids are spoiled and don't think they need to work for a living, but the problem is ultimately the management's responsibility. The decide who to hire, how to train, and how to treat their employees.
If they can't get anyone to work there that is competent, then they should close, or pay more to attract more people.

I agree with Kevin that they should adapt enough to be part of society, but most of us have immigrant ancestry that originates from all over the globe.
When my great grandparents came over from Germany before WW2, they did not speak any english. I would think many of our older extended family memebers are were in the same situation. I think in many instances, new immigrants to this country want to speak english to fit in, but it is a little easier said than done. It is a catch 22 many times where they have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to get by and we're expecting english lessons in their spare time?
It is going to take time..just like when any other immigrant group comes into a new country.

My brother and I recently went to a Dunkin' Donuts to get coffee. He ordered a small, black coffee and they screwed that up. I wish I were kidding but it's true. They put a very small amount of milk in it. Almost like they forgot it was supposed to be a black coffee, poured in a little milk and served it as is.

Man I want Wendy's now. The only problem is the nearest is a 7,000¥ and one hour bullet train ride away in Kobe.
Spicy Chicken Sandwich....
Maybe I'll just go to Moss Burger for lunch today.

You have 3 choices:
1) Inexpensive
2) High quality
3) Fast/High performance
Pick two. Fast food would be 1 and 3 in my opinion...with fast being "get it in your hands to eat in a hurry" or "it exited my body quickly"

You have Wendy's? That is so unfair.
China just got its first Burger King (in Shanghai) and Hong Kong has a couple, there is even an A&W's in Beijing, but our nearest Wendy's must be Kobe too.
What is Moss Burger?

Most fast food joints only pay 5.15 to all their employees regardless of how hard they work. they are also only allowed to work about 5 hours a day... thats $25 a day. When I worked at burger king the highest payed employee was a burger flipper who had been their 7 years and made 6.50/hr. That was more than the managers. The only perk to being a manager is getting to work full time and not having to actaully 'work'.
So none of us would work for $25 a day but we call them spoiled kids if they work it, but don't put their whole heart and soul into each and every burger.
Keep in mind the person who took your order at wendys wasnt the person who made it. It was sent back on a computer to the assembly line where people stand hunched over for hours at a time making hundreds of the same burgers... they probably just spaced your special order. They also know they will get in more trouble for filling orders too slow than for messing them up.
I'm not going to say you get what you pay for cuz ya don't. Most of the money you pay for your burger goes to city, state, and fedral regulations and licensing fees. Restaraunts are known for having very narrow profit margins. My friend just had to pay $70,000 for some new city regulation. Once I worked for a company that had to pay $10,000 fine just because some new employee threw a pop can into the wrong waste can....it really wanst that big a deal.

BTW- at the time we were the ONLY CUSTOMER at drive up.
NO INSIDE CUSTOMERS.
They had been open for 20 minutes.
They did not prepare the specialty items correctly (Managers fault for poor training)
You missed the point.
The MANAGERS hired the ignorants.
They must take responsibility for WHO they hire.
The SLAVIC illiterate was the one at fault.
Why repeat the order and THEN GET IT WRONG?
if your going to be in AMERICAN customer service/fast food YOU MUST SPEAK THE LANGUAGE,

Quit your whining. This doesn't even compare to the $160 dinner I bought last night in which I received a med-rare tenderloin, when I specifically stated I wanted rare. Then having to wait for an extra 20 minutes for the situation to rectify itself. Not to mention the 5 minute wait for a new bottle of wolf blass when the cork broke off inside the first.
UGH!

I hope you don't have a college degree with your poor grammar.
 just playin.
Seriously, the thread starter can kiss Wendy's sweaty, immigrant-hiring ball sack. They are a bussiness and they can do whatever they damn well like- especially when people like the thread starter keep returning.
Y3a, don't blame the managers or the people they hire- blame yourself. Your mistakes:
#1. Not checking your order.
#2. Eating fast food in the first place (how can you complain about the quality of the food: ITS FAST FOOD!!! Get take out at a real restaurant if you want real food).
#3. Expecting too much from minimum wage workers.
No one twisted your arm to patronize the bussiness.
In response to the posters above who said us "kids" these days spoiled: this isn't the 1960, a dollar isn't worth what it used to be. Think about it: an hour's worth of minimum wage today is not enough to buy 2 comic books. Those of us that did go to college are stuck with so much debt that we could have easily afforded the house and car you had at our age were we to enter the work force immediately. To top it all off, there are no jobs because no one retires at 60 these days. The white collars/baby boomers keep their jobs, causing a jam that prevents the younger people under them from moving up.
Last of all, anyone who has ever worked in the food industry knows how poorly restaurant patrons treat the employees. The people working the fast food windows don't even make tips- I'm willing to bet they intentionally mess with @$$#01e customers on purpose. I know I would.

About the wine cork, why didn't they just screen the wine into a decanter. Perfectly fine that way. You could expect that from an older port, and that's what is customarily done.

Have you ever experienced fine dining? Sounds as though you haven't.
If they had of served me that wine, I would have got up and walked out.
They also threw out the tenderloin they screwed up. $100 down the drain on wine and beef.

What is Moss Burger?
Moss Burger is a Japanese chain, which if I remember correctly makes burgers with the bun part from a rice cake!
At least we have Tripe O in Hong Kong these days, and they have a vegetarian burger option so it suits me (Burger King does also, but its only at the Peak tower or the departure level at the airport)
But there are NO chains in Hong Kong that offer a drive though - land rentals are just too expensive! So you either walk in and sit down or take away on foot.

Commitment to the team? The employer/corporation is a part of that team. If the employer is not willing to step up and enable their employees and managers, then morale suffers and service/products go in the crapper.
They seem to be doing all right money wise...maybe hiring better employees would be easier if they paid them more...
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortu...hots/1562.html
I agreee that doing the best you can at a job is very important. It's important not for the company (or really the consumer) but for the employee so that they can move their career upward in the their present job or in the case of working at the drive through at Wendy's, move on to something better probably else where...it's the American way. Work to better yourself to achieve your goals by doing a good job and ultimately help the corporate machine in the process.
Fast food=dead end job (and yes I have worked in the business and it is why I left it a long long time ago...)

Want to hear my McDonald's story? It doesn't matter what your response is, because it would take to long for me to get it, so here it goes...(time is important, although they are listed as approximations)
10:15 a.m. - My wife and I were on our way out to Austin for a friend's wedding (traveling with my parents, actually), and we stopped at the closest McDonald's for a little breakfast. I order a sausage biscuit meal and my wife orders a McGriddle meal. And yes, we've both gained weight since we married.
10:20-10:25 a.m. - 90% of the 20 or so employees are singing, laughing, goofing off, standing around, or dancing (yes, dancing). One of the cooks with 4 gold teeth dances on a woman who I later discovered to be the manager. He's rubbing his crotch on her, and she's laughing it up. Then he half screams, "That's how I roll it, mother ****er!" All of the customers hear it, and a few decide to leave, either because they're offended or their order has not been taken after 10+ minutes of waiting in a very short line.
10:30 a.m. - I ask about our meals. The woman behind the register says, "It's coming." I look in the kitchen, and no one is working on anything. They're now in a circle, dancing.
10:35 a.m. - I ask about the meals again. The woman rolls her eyes, turns around, grabs a sausage biscuit, drops it in a bag, and throws/slides it across the counter. It nearly fell on the ground. I looked inside, and noticed that my "meal" was without a hash brown. I told her, and she just started at me and finally said, "We stopped makin' 'em five minutes ago. One of the two people in the store working said, "Just drop some more in, please, Keena!" She drops some in and I ask about my wife's meal. She says it's coming.
10:40 a.m. - I ask about the meals again. Keena throws my wife her "McGriddle meal." Inside the bag is two apple pies. My wife (an excitable woman) finally speaks up and says, "Ma'am, this was a McGriddle meal. Keena says, "We stopped serving breakfast 10 minutes ago! We ain't makin' no more McGriddles."
I had enough. I said, "That's it. Where is the manager?" I must've said it louder than I realized, because most of the employees turned around. The woman who was getting danced on steps over and asks me what the problem is. I said, "Ma'am, we've been here 25 minutes. We orderd our breakfast. No one made it. They danced, they laughed, and they cussed long enough and loud enough that people were offended and left! I'm told I can't get hash browns. We're told that we can't get the breakfast we paid for, even though we ordered it with 15 minutes of breakfast still..."
The manager started smirking at me. You have to understand; I don't get angry. It takes a LOT to get me upset. I snapped.
"Ma'am, DO NOT smirk at me!" Finally the employees were all serious. "I want my money back, and I want to walk out of the door. I don't care about getting the breakfast anymore. You and all of your employees are ruining this store!"
Keena got our money and literally threw it at us. Some of the change bounced on the floor. We left and went to WhatABurger, where we were treated like royalty.
I usually let myself get run over by people at restaurants or fast food joints, but they crossed the line so many times in 25 minutes that I completely lost my cool. I can remember yelling at someone maybe 5 times within the past 2 years. It was the worst I've ever seen.

They seem to be doing all right money wise...maybe hiring better employees would be easier if they paid them more...
FORTUNE 500 2006: Wendy's International
I agreee that doing the best you can at a job is very important. It's important not for the company (or really the consumer) but for the employee so that they can move their career upward in the their present job or in the case of working at the drive through at Wendy's, move on to something better probably else where...it's the American way. Work to better yourself to achieve your goals by doing a good job and ultimately help the corporate machine in the process.
Fast food=dead end job (and yes I have worked in the business and it is why I left it a long long time ago...)
You learn responsibility, how to manage your time, how to deal with customers and co-workers and managers, how to work as a team, how to manage personal finances, how to make sure your personal life does not spill over into and adversely affect work, food preparation, how to clean and organize, the importance of routine maintenance, rudimentary personal politics, interpersonal communications, personal hygiene and how to wash, iron and sew your uniform, how to buy and maintain a car and how to work your way up the ladder and make yourself more valuable to the team/manager/organization.
And if you get a promotion you get a chance to learn even MORE!
Fast food is an important basic training ground for American youth and once they move on from there they should be considered a better qualified employee and an individual.

That is exactly right, my first manager in fast food respected all of us workers and didn't put up with any junk. She had us work as a team and we all worked hard for our small hourly wage. I came out of the experience with a great reference and a higher paying job down the road. I also gained respect for the people that serve in the fast food industry.
The managers have to expect better performance.

To kmkkid: You sound pompous. A friend who is a sommelier says that given certain wines interaction with cork over time, it is perfectly reasonable to strain some wines through a screen into a decanter. It's the people ignorant of this which throw the hissy fits.
This happened just a few weeks ago when someone ordered a 600 dollar port and the cork crumbled. The waitstaff calmly mentioned that this sometimes happens, and the group ended up loving their wine.
btw - I live on Martha's Vineyard friend, we have a few places even an afficionado such as yourself might find acceptable. Please save your knowledge about my dining experience to yourself.

I'm far from pompous
I didn't throw a hissy fit at all, because they treated the situation correctly. The waiter unscrewed the cork, and the bottom had fallen into the bottle. He simply said "Sorry sir, there seems to be a problem with this particular bottle. I'll Be right back with another."
You don't strain a bottle of wine in front of your customer, that's totally unacceptable.

The cork rotted.
You should always store the wine on it's side. So the cork wont do that.

I don't like red wine by itself. But a good dry red wine is great with certain foods.
White with others.

Having worked many jobs, you're what we in the business call a fool.
When I worked $7.25 an hour tech support jobs, I did not give them as much effort as a $24.50 an hour job. That's just foolish to put your heart and soul into a job which pays pennies. And often, your managers will understand, and so will your customers.

What is Moss Burger?
Moss Burger is slightly stylish burgers, still fast food, though slightly more expensive than your average MD or BKs. They do have really weird seasonal foods, which are good. Like their Tandori Burger or their Avocado Burger. I try and avoid eating any 'fast food' over here, but I will take Moss Burger over MD any day.
I've never seen a BK or an A&W in Japan. Rumor is that theres a Denny's in Osaka. I just know from experience that the Wendy's in Kobe and the Wendy's in Kyoto are fun places to eat. (And whats with frickin Hiroshima having TWO Subways within 5 minutes walk of each other downtown?)

If you don't like a restaurant then don't go there. Money has a way of motivating change in buisiness. I worked at a McDonald's and a Brown's Chicken and Pasta. At both places everyone spoke English. One person spoke Arabic. Another spoke Filipino. Several spoke Spanish. Orders get messed up. It is not the end of the world.
