lately I feel like everytime something goes wrong, whether I am involved or not the buck somehow gets passed on to me. I'm kind of tired of it and I am ready to quit my job. I have been tired and almost on the brink of depression. I am still in college and I mean my grades are suffering along with my relationships. I have never really "quit" a job before, and I know that the job is in bad circumstances right now, not that I believe I did anything wrong, but because of the situation.

Do it man, you will be so much happier a week after the fact.
Try to find a new job first though or try sticking up for yourself at your current job. If you aren't scared of them firing you then you don't let others push you around as much.

Don't let a crappy job that you hate spoil your relationships or jeopardize you academic goals. It's better to resign than to be fired.

But then you don't get to claim unemployment benefits...

If they fire you can you collect unemployment?
That way you can leave your job and get paid for it.

Usually if you get fired you can't collect unemployment. That's for people who get laid off.

If you decide to quit, do it with style (or lack of).
Jump on your bosses desk, moon him, and then give him the finger. Yell "I quit" and start for the door.
Right before you leave, compliment him on his nice suit and wish him happy holidays.

I looooove quitting. If I quit from a place I don't like I time it right so I have everything I need from the office and I leave at the worst possible time which is usually right before a major deadline.

Ha ha, I've only done it twice and trust me both places really deserved it.

I worked at a Round Table as a teen and didn't get along with the manager. I quit in the middle of my shift while it was insanely busy. Quite satisfying.

Best thing to do is leave without burning your bridge. I've been amazed during my career to see just how small the world really is. Trust me, I've wanted to moon them, give them the finger and tell them to fsck off, but in hindsight I'm very glad I've never done that.

He's in college. If it ever comes up he could say it was caused by finals stress.

Don't know the rules in Nashville, but what about for incompetence, which seems to be what the op thinks they are after him for?

The best way to quit is to keep them guessing and quit at the most inconvienient time for them since they have abused you. Go in on your last day (before a day when they really, really need you) without saying a word about quitting. Then, at the end of the day, send your supervisor an email (one sentence long) that you are quitting and this is your last day. If you have any keys or stuff, leave them on your work table. Then just disappear without ever saying anything to them again.

From the TN Labor website:
In order to receive Unemployment Insurance Benefits, you must be unemployed through no fault of your own. You must be able and available to work. You must look for work in your usual manner and you may be required to register for work. And, you must have qualifying wages.
Clearly you'd have to submit the circumstances, but I'd guess in most cases incompetence won't get you unemployment benefits. Maybe if you got hired for a position that you were clearly under-qualified for, and then got fired after they realized you weren't the right employee.

Write down everything you like about your job, and everything you don't like. Also, everything you don't think is fair.
Go discuss this with your boss. (what do you have to lose?) Maybe you can actually make your job more bearable instead of just quitting. If you can't, at least you'll have integrity and you can claim you tried. If you just quit - what does that say to yourself and future employers?

I was waiting for someone with a decent response other than quitting in the middle of a shift. To me it seems horribly irresponsible no matter how bad the job. I'm still in HS and only had one job so far, which I hated and had to quit because of lack of time and other problems with the job (coworker was completely intolerable to work with). I quit but I gave 2 weeks notice even though it wasn't necessary and not even expected from my boss, who was very cool about it. Do the right thing and try to resolve issues before you do something unnecessarily drastic (finger, mooning, etc...). If it doesn't work out, give em the 2 weeks.

Notice would be preferred, but do employers always give notice when they fire an employee they don't like? This works both ways.

i feel you man ... make sure you have a backup. i was laid off in 2004 and it took me a LONG time to find a suitable new gig. i had part time work and was freelancing, but it took a long time to find a steady part time gig.
economy might be doing better now, so i am not sure.
