I read the thread title as, "The Times they are a Changin':
I find it interesting how much more important and prominent a crest was in olden times.

The greatest change in presentation came in 1932 under the direction of Stanley Morison, the distinguished typographer. When planning a typeface suitable for the impeccable presswork and high quality newsprint, he wrote that it had to be “worthy of The Times — masculine, English, direct, simple, not more novel . . . and absolutely free from faddishness and frivolity”.
Morison’s solution was Times New Roman, a typeface of classic elegance that has become the most widely used type in the world.
Also it mentions that they used all Apple computers in the 90s to create their first decent computer designed font.

Urgh. Wood engraving. That went out of style in the 1990's.

Why did they stop using logographic printing?

Agreed. I'm not a graphic artist in the slightest, but to me the new font looks too...triangular.

very cool. I love to see the progression. And I think now that Times New Roman is so ubiquitous as to be generic, and that modern typography can come up with other readable typefaces modern printing can handle, a new look is a good idea. They kept the crest for history's sake I guess. There is value in the history, and implied integrity.
What is bugging me is, back when they designed these crests everything meant something. In all of the crests but one the unicorn is looking at the lion. In one it is looking away. Any purpose in that you think?
