Ssh, don't say Bluetooth or starman will soon be on your ass about how absolutely horrible sending a ringtone to a phone via Bluetooth is.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

USB cables work, too. Sometimes some of this stuff takes a firmware hack.

Personally, If I can download a ringtone, I pick the Super Mario Bros. theme. If I can't, I pick something that sounds good and is loud. I don't buy ringtones all of the time, so at the end of the day, it doesn't matter to me.

SMS is only for text messages, and AFAIK, you can't attach a ringtone to an MMS.

You could upload it to a web server and try downloading it to your phone that way.

At least with my carrier I can email midi files to my phone. (So that means it is an MMS)

The phone and carrier must support it.

Mine is US Cellular.

Thus I can google "Midi + Song name"

On my phone that does not support getting ring tones via MMS it just gets a text saying I sent a picture to the phone and where to see it on the web, then the website shows a blank spot where an image should be, and no midi.

Bluetooth was invented to be a kind of wireless peripheral cable, so why should ANYONE worry about using it for that purpose? That's just dumb in my opinion.

I use a USB cable to connect my RAZR to my MBP, and I have transferred a number of files between the two with BT as well. I don't think the RAZR directly supports moving files through USB, but it sure does over BT.

I still don't get why anyone would ever pay for ringtones when you can put whatever MP3 you want straight onto your phone.

That's a bit like asking "How can I press the power button to turn on my Mac without using my hands, my feet, or my nose?"

You will incur some bandwidth charges (if you aren't on unlimited data transfer already) but you can simply upload files to a mobile phone uploader site and download the files directly to your phone.

a second vote for Howard Forums...

some providers won't allow custom ringtones unless you buy them. One way around this is to rename mp3 files to 3gp, then choose 'em as a ringtone.

Bluetooth + Cingular RAZR V3 = all the free ringtones/wallpapers/applications/games that you can find on the internet.
