Problem is that you and the people you know are not a valid sample. I don't know anyone with a Blu-Ray player (I have a friend with a PS3, but no Blu-Ray movies), but I know a few people with HD DVD players and movies. You can't really go by data like that, you have to look at the whole...

Here in Spain there is a crazy promotion where you buy a PS3 and you get 40 (fourty) Blu-Ray movies… I asked to the store guy and he told me that like past year they have ran out of Wii and they don't sell the PS3 that well cause all people want is a Nintendo Wii and that MP3 player made by iPod

Actually, no. It would seem that $10 is the sweet zone.

The old movies are $20, but it's a 2-for-1 sale. These 2-for-1 (or "BOGO") sales are very powerful tool to get people to buy, for obvious reasons. HD DVD is doing it now, but Blu-ray was using it when Transformers came out on HD DVD for example.

Alright, now I got every freaking Harry Potter movie on HDDVD. Funny thing is that I don't own a single Harry Potter movie on DVD. Haha..

Just bought 4 Harry Potter movies for $39.90. Already got the latest Harry Potter from Bestbuy BOGO sale.

So goMac, do you think it's possible that the popularity of the Harry Potter movies on HD-DVD might just have something to do with the fact that they're practically giving them away?

I'm not sure I'd call standard DVD pricing "giving them away" - but yes, they're definitely more popular because of the deal.

Warner is going to be so happy with the Harry Potter sales on HDDVD. It beat out Bourne Ultimatum on DVD which is selling under $17 and it's a new release. The Harry Potter HDDVD movies that is on sale are a few years old and people already own them on DVD. So it's quite an amazing feat.

Harry Potter is a LOT more popular than the Bourne series. No way, it was going to sell less.

Well, Bourne Ultimatum on HD DVD outsold Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix on HD DVD in the first week.

It also outsold HP: OotP on Blu-ray too in the first week. Mind you, part of the reason is people bought the Harry Potter box set.

Practically giving them away? It's fair pricing. Only one of them is a brand new movie. God forbid the HD-DVD camp charge something fair for their movies.

In other news, I mentioned before that Apple was trying to get people to include iPod-ized versions of their movies on Bluray discs. It looks like Apple has gotten Fox to start including iPod-ized versions of their movies on their standard DVD's.

Bourne Ultimatum is a new movie release. Came out in 2007. Bourne Ultimatum on DVD beat out the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix movie on DVD. Bourne Ultimatum on DVD is at #6, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD is at #8.

The Harry Potter HDDVD movies that dominate the bestseller list are older Harry Potter movies that are a few years old. Most people already own those on DVD.

Actually, I'd agree that by today's standards, they're "practically giving them away". BOGO sales are very effective

However, the point is HD DVD is just doing what Blu-ray has been doing for months. Both sides want to inflate their numbers. It seems to me though Blu-ray has been keener to do this than HD DVD, since HD DVD has been working the player price angle better.

I keep seeing Bluray BOGO sales at Fry's, Bestbuy, Circuit City, buy.com, and amazon.com during the Holiday Season.

Finally we are getting some decent HDDVD BOGO sales.

You're missing my point. You were pointing to high Harry Potter sales to back up your theory that HD-DVD buyers are mostly families and Blu-ray buyers are mostly "fanboys" and videophiles. But you can't use these numbers to prove anything of the kind when the Blu-ray versions of these movies are in effect twice as expensive as the HD-DVD versions.

There's nothing wrong with BOGO sales. As a consumer I like them, and they're good business (assuming your primary goal is selling lots of discs and not necessarily making a lot per disc).
