Xbox 360/Halo2 question

Hi all.
Happy holidays.
Let me preface this by saying this is my first foray into Xbox.
I just got an Xbox 360, Tiger Woods, and Halo 1 and 2.
I signed up for Xbox live and played tiger woods.
I then put in Halo 1. It loaded for a sec, then went belly up when the blue "pills" microsoft logo started. I went to my mac, went online and discovered that an update was needed for backward compatibility. I learned it should have automatically loaded when I made a Xbox live account.
So, on Microsoft's suggestion, I pulled it down from the net, burned the single file to a cd, and installed it on the Xbox. The unit said it was applied, but did not restart as anticipated. Halo 1 however, works fine. Halo 2 OTH, gets stuck right at the first note of the halo theme.
Folks, any idea what in the world is wrong here? I'm about to take the stupid thing back. Tiger woods and Halo 2 are all i care about working. Is anyone else aware of a fix for this?
Many gigantic thanks in advance. If I posted in the wrong place, mods feel free to move this book.

There have actually been a few updates to those games (I play H1 and H2, although not Tiger Woods). Presumably the most recent update to each game would fix things.
Updating the Dashboard and updating individual games are different processes. The update to Dashboard is probably what they meant by automatically downloaded when you make an XBL account. The update to the game should not be loaded automatically when you make an XBL account, but rather when you play the game it should prompt you to download an update ("an update is required for this game" or something). I did not know anything about being able to DL and burn updates to a CD to install them.
Since you just got this system you have nothing to lose from trying a reset. Just remember your XBL account info in case it wipes out user accounts and you need to re-enter it. This page describes the process for resetting the unit: Xbox 360 Cache Clear Code Revealed - Xbox It notes that "Performing this function will also clear any software updates" so you can try them again.
Once finished I would start the games normally and wait for the prompt to ask you to install updates. The Xbox Dashboard may also inform you an update is required when you try to connect to XBL.

To be determined later.

Yeah, we saw that a few months ago at Best Buy (when Tiger Woods came out). The goobers there offer an update CD for $20, with a list of all the games that it patches.
My question to them was "why do I want a 360 when I have to download patches?" What a bunch of crap. They should work WITHOUT patches.

He can be fixed -- you can't.

The emulation profiles for Halo 1 and 2 should be preloaded on the hard drive (assuming you have the premium bundle), so I don't know what the problem would be. :/

And, it doesn't sound good that he had to do those steps, either. This should all just be "automatic" when connecting to Live. Seeing as you had problems, I'd exchange the unit - something just doesn't sound right.

Wow. And here I thought consoles were supposed to remove the kind of incompatibilities and headaches from computer based games!
Well, I guess that proved me wrong.

Thanks, fellas.
I'm taking it back and asking for a swap out.
After spending nearly a week with it, I've decided that I won't be parting with the platform.
All the 360 games work, so hopefully everything will be cool after I swap the unit.
I really appreciate the responses!

They do. This guy has some weird problems. My 360 downloaded a patch once or twice and it just worked.
Halo 1 and 2 work fine on mine without any headaches or dealing with things like this.
Do you have a hard drive or are you saving all this stuff to the memory card?

Hard Drive. I bought the premium bundle that included the HD, High Def cable, doo dah, doo dah.
It's amazing. I can play Halo 1, but HAlo 2 goes t1ts up every time.
Ah well. It's getting swapped out tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Well, took it back last night and after them denying it was the unit, and me threatening to contest the charge they swapped it out. Works fine now.
They also called later and said I'd been sold a return.
At least it works.
Thanks, All!
