US actress Gwyneth Paltrow prefers British dinner talk
Dec 02 11:24 AM US/Eastern
Oscar-winning US actress Gwyneth Paltrow feels dinner talk is far more interesting in her adopted homeland Britain than back in her native country.
"I love the English lifestyle, it's not as capitalistic as America. People don't talk about work and money, they talk about interesting things at dinner," she told "NS," the weekend magazine supplement of daily Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias on Saturday.
"I like living here because I don't fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans," the 34-year-old added.
Paltrow, who won a best actress Oscar for 1998's "Shakespeare in Love," lives in London with British band Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin whom she wed in 2003.
She said having US pop star Madonna, 48, who married British film director Guy Ritchie six years ago, nearby was another advantage to living in London.
"She's like an older sister. Everything I have gone through, she went through ten times worse and ten times longer. She gives me good advice about how to say no and take care of myself," said Paltrow.

Well, maybe she can just market her films to the Brits and afford her lavish lifestyle on their pounds and shillings and we'll just keep our DOLLARS for movies with REAL American actresses.
What should we expect from somebody who named their child after a FRUIT!
Well, her and MaDON'Ta can just stay there and I hope they don'ta coma backa!

It's a imitation of Italian like Madonna is supposed to be Italian.

No Gwynnie, the British only appear more intelligent than Americans to outsiders such as yourself because most of them hide the fact that they're as thick as pigpoop behind "airs and graces".

I fail to see why anyone should care. She has an opinion. She is a celebrity so we hear this opinion. Sure it was a silly comment so why say equally silly things here? I suppose we should be offended because she named her child after a fruit instead of a 'sensible' name?
That sentence needs to be put out of its misery.
Frankly I find british accents quite appealing over American ones.

So this makes them more intelligent?
I'm actually fond of British culture as a whole. I love their humor, their football, their music, and the accent, but Paltrow has proven to everyone back here in America that she has followed in the footsteps of Madonna and Johnny Depp.
She has begun loving the smell of her own now-foreign farts.
This almost makes me feel guilty for being a Coldplay fan.

I'm not entirely sure I trust Gwyneth Paltrow's opinion of people's intelligence.
However, it is much easier to make a living in pounds and shillings than dollars and cents — the former are worth twice as much!

Yes, but you have to give twice as much to the scumbags in government. Which is why 2.5 million pensioners are going to freeze this winter.

It's ironic that you would say this. Because I believe you raise Britain's collective I.Q. at least 10 points!
If she had said you were smarter than most Americans I would quickly agree.

As an American living in the UK, much like Ms. Paltrow, I have to say that I think the only obvious party of limited intelligence would be Ms. Paltrow herself.
It is certinaly possible that were some verifyable IQ test given to the entire populations of the UK and the US, the UK average may come out a bit ahead. And it may not.
The US is a big, big place. We have lots and lots of people. There are some very well educated and some very ignorant poeple. Truth is, so do the Brits. I'm gussing Ms. Paltrow is mixing with the upper crust of English society, and compared with the Hollywood crowd, they may seem regfreshingly intellegent. Were she to spend some time in a local pub up north after an ugly football loss (or glorious win for that matter) she may ahve a different picture.
I love living here. I love the culture and the poeple and the history. But it's no ivory tower of culture and intellectualism. For craps sake, the Bob the Builder theme song was #1 hit over here- following in a long proud tradition of bad novelty songs taking over the airwaves.
There are some wonderful, interesting, bright poeple over here. There is also a great number of unwashed and vapid twits.
Just like at home.

Shillings? You are roughly 25-30 years too late to do that...
Now it's Pounds and Pence (penny).

Well to add to Paltrow's point, the thread title should read "Brits Smarter Than Yanks? Yes, Says Actress Paltrow."
Sorry, but "More Smart" is just bad grammar.

maybe it's a reaction against the superficiality of Hollywood. In the UK while people can be pompous and prententious - there is a reaction against it like:
David Blaine - sits in a box in NY- people oh and ah at him
sits in a box in London - people jeer and throw eggs at him

although I did hear recently that a chav put lots of videos of himself breaking the law onto youtube, which now has the attention of the police - who have a history with him and are eager to get him.
arguably not the greatest sign of a towering chav intellect there...

Yes it does. It also has "The North," where the inhabitants have less wealth, less education, have thick accents, tend to be more overweight and over all is a more rural landscape with pockets of urban blight.
Sound familiar?

Not met the chavs, have you? They're similar to US innercity punks, but with only a fraction of their intelligence and 10x their aggressive tendencies.

I find the first line the most hilarious:
"I love the English lifestyle, it's not as capitalistic as America."
She made all her money off of the:
- Capitalistic system
- American cinema
While I have a great respect for Europe, I can't help but laugh when famous people mock what made them famous.

Maybe you missed my point. She enjoys their culture much like many people, but you cannot say one country is more intelligent than another. This is why we don't take what celebrities say seriously because at the end of the day most of them aren't terribly bright.
But if it makes you all feel more secure bashing brits by all means go ahead.

as mentioned above - they can be very vicious and will happily kick someone to the ground and keep going just for the hell of it. They'll rob you and try to goad you into confrontation because their aim isn't to rob, but to intimidate and beat the proverbial out of their victims. Getting your phone, ipod etc is just a bonus. That's a good point. While celebs are well traveled and exposed to some fantastic experiences... most celebs don't have much more than a high school education. Not that a college degree MAKES you smart... but it does give you a foundation of information that's difficult to pick up elsewhere.

You have been horn-swoggled. There are some brilliant Southerners who would just as soon have you believe they were dim-witted. And woe be it to those who take the bait. And though the dumb, hillbilly or red neck Southern good ole boy stereotype may have some basis in fact, I think far too little credit is given to NON-Southern idiots.
You can find idiots EVERYWHERE.
By the way, where do you live?
There must be at least a couple of idiots in your town.

Sorry but I use up all my supplies of " not give a damn what she says, like everyone else" on the posters here. So when it comes to the thread subjects who piss me off, I'm fresh out of, "not give a damn..."
