I've been in sort of a work/life slump lately and a couple people have recommending that I should think about getting a life coach. I've never really thought about it before. Anyone have any experience with life coaches before? What did you think? Did they help?

In my experience, they're a way of passing the buck when friends ask for help. Sort of a replacement mentor for those without. I guess in the modern era they might replace an actual network of successful family and friends from which to learn the skills necessary to evaluate and adapt and grow.

If you need someone to read the self-help books to you, it might be a good idea.

On second thought, it might be a good idea. Sort of like a personal trainer -- those have definite value. Might be a good way to jump start out of your slumps.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

They can be all right though I think many are just quacks. Ironically, many life coaches became life coaches to get out of the very type of "slump" you describe. A lot of them are little more than therapists or people who act as a "mommy" and create action steps for you and bug you to make sure you actually do them. Maybe they'll throw in a standardized test to try and figure out what your skills are.

There are now continuing ed classes at some universities that help people recover from slumps. You might want to check them out before you hire a life coach.

I would go by personal recommendation only. Too many quacks out there.

I'd prefer life cheerleaders. Probably seven of them. One for each day of the week.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Drop and give me 50 push-ups. Then we'll talk about life coaching. After some sit-ups.

Why don't you ask us? We're poorly qualified and have a vast amount of collective experience.

Better yet, stand up and be a man (or woman, whatever you are). Suck it up, plan out your life and live your plan. Be prepared to deviate from your plan when necessary.

… and that in a nutshell is what your lifecoach will tell you. Alligator just saved you a boatload of money. Good going
