Rickey Henderson should be the 3rd base coach for the A's now that Ron Washington has left to manage the Rangers. Come on Billy Bean, make it so!

Isn't Rickey in a wheelchair by now?

He can out run most MLB players rather easily.
What about a wheelchair again?

$126M / 7 years = $18M a year
With 32 starts per year @ 108 pitches per game, that equals to a shitload of money $5,208 per pitch.

He's back!
Rickey Henderson hired as Mets hitting coach - Newsday.com
(It makes more sense to me, though, if Howard Johnson takes over for Rick Down as hitting coach, and Rickey takes HoJo's current 1st Base coach job. I think HoJo knows quite a bit about hitting, and Rickey knows quite a bit about basestealing, so that works out.

I think Rickey might know more about hitting than HoJo, and the players might respond more to knowledge from the greatest leadoff hitter of all time (arguably).

I do think that the players will respond well to Rickey's presence. Just the Special 10-day gigs that Rickey has had with the Mets in the past has make a key impact in making Jose Reyes the player he is. (And I'm not sure if you've noticed, but Carlos Gomez is faster than Reyes. With a little bit more experience, he could be even more of an impact player!)
I'm just not sure if Rickey is the best choice for a hitting coach, especially since this would be his first full-time coaching gig, and HoJo has had experience in the minors. Besides, can you imagine how much more fear that Jose will inspire on the basepaths if Rickey is whispering into his ear between every pitch?

I just heard some story of how HoJo will assume some hitting coach responsibilities, sounds like Rickey just wanted the title. I also forgot about Rickey being Rickey, and how Rickey is as Rickey does, and Rickey sometimes isnt mentally prepared to work on occasion.

The Mets don't know how they are going to use Rickey at this moment....hopefully as a player/coach!

Fixed that for you. Rickey is certainly the best leadoff hitter we've ever seen, but I think if Jose stays healthy and develops more as a player, he might be able to match him.
And Ichiro knows what he's doing too, he might end up vying for the title just because he's on base so damn much, especially if you count his Japanese pro career. (Not sure if he batted leadoff all that time, though. He might be a more effective #2, come to think of it.)
Let's check back on this thread in 2027 and see if I'm right!

Ichiro doesn't have the power that Rickey had. Reyes has a LONG way to go; however, he is off to a promising start to say the least. Everybody thought that Kenny Lofton was the next Rickey when he started, needless to say, that hasn't happened.

I am off to see Coach Rickey tonight at Wrigley....I scored seats right on the 1st base line and on the 13th row. It will be weird seeing him as a coach, but I am looking forward to it.

woot! Hopefully, you'll see history being made by Tommy Glavine (that doesn't have an asterisk in front of it!)

Amen, that will be suh-weet. I really hope the Mets can take this series. Taking Milwaukee and Chicago back to back is impressive.
Too bad that botched call at 1st yesterday turned into 6 runs!

Nope, it was all those dinky little bloop hits afterwards that turned into six runs....
But then again, every pitcher has to have a bad day someday, and John Maine is no exception....

Congrats Mr. Glavine! Awesome game.
Reyes is f'n amazing....and so is Rickey. I love the aggressive base-running the Mets displayed.

I think Rickey Henderson and Barry Bonds should have sex so they can produce a super fast running lead-off home run hitter that can steal bases like crazy.

So what would Barry bring to the table? Rickey has both covered.

Maybe I should have picked Nolan Ryan instead.

Tom Glavine or Greg Maddux. Nolan, God bless him, has a leaky ticker.

It's really a shame that Barry roided. He still would have hit 500 homers if he hadn't. The roids only helped him get the record. Roids or not, he still would have stolen the 500+ bases. In fact, I'd argue he would have stolen even more if he didn't get so big from the roids.
Bottom line, Barry is the only 500/500 player in the history of baseball. It's a damn shame that he tarnished this by cheating to get the home run record. Otherwise, he probably would have gone down as the greatest ever.

Has Ricky Henderson ever been hacked up on goofballs? Even goofballs he didn't inhale?
