What is the truest thing you have heard or been told?

For me, I had a sociology professor tell my class, "The things we most dislike about others are things we most dislike about ourselves."

I also had an Anthro prof state, "all cultures are cultures of conformity."

At the time, I didn’t think much about these statements, but over the years, I have found them to be immensely true.

Maybe I will tell you something very true, HackManDan: your sociology and anthropology professors are only re-enforcing things you already believed, or were inclined to believe. You weren't challenged into learning things outside of your sphere of comfort.

I've actually been thinking of this lately and oddly enough have started a clippings folder of these quotes. Here are two:

One:
When there is moral rot within a nation, its
government topples easily.
But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability.

Two:
Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor
will be ignored in their own time of need.

Kerrigan,

I'm not sure were your coming from telling me that my soci and anthro professors were only re-enforcing things I already believed. When I came to a college, I was quite honestly an ignorant conservative (not to imply that conservative’s are ignorant). I knew little of the world outside the Orange County bubble I grew up in. Going to college challenged me intellectually like nothing else had. My worldview changed quite dramatically as I was exposed to a myriad of new ideas, and learned to question my assumptions. However, that’s neither here nor there. The quotes I posted are just simply observations made by much wiser people, which have stuck with me over the years.

You can. Although it will tend to bunch up. Alternatively if it's a short rope you might succeed in pushing it sideways and still maintain a reasonably straight line. Actually, you can push anything, it's just what happens that's different. So I think what you really meant to say was "You can't push a straight rope lengthways and successfully achieve movement without the rope bending."

Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savage's whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.

From the smallest necessity to the highest religious abstraction, from the wheel to the skyscraper, everything we are and everything we have comes from one attribute of man -- the function of his reasoning mind.

To rest one's case on faith means to concede that reason is on the side of one's enemies- that one has no rational arguments to offer.

To deal with men by force is as impractical as to deal with nature by persuasion.

It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

Intellectual freedom cannot exist without political freedom; political freedom cannot exist without economic freedom; a free mind and a free market are corollaries.

Economic power is exercised by means of a positive, by offering men a reward, an incentive, a payment, a value; political power is exercised by means of a negative, by the threat of punishment, injury, imprisonment, and destruction. The businessman's tool is values; the bureaucrat's tool is fear.

The purpose of morality is to teach you, not to suffer and die, but to enjoy yourself and live.

We cannot fight against anything, unless we fight for something -- and what we must fight for is the supremacy of reason, and a view of man as a rational being.

A leash is only a rope with a noose on both ends.

A real conversation I had with my dad after I had a particularly annoying time at work:

Me: "Dad, I found something Windows doesn't do so well..."
Dad: "You're a f*****g genius, son!"

About that point my brothers and I couldn't stop laughing.

My Sociology professor is fond of saying "If you aren't failing, you aren't trying hard enough". I like it. He's quite big on changing the militant style of thinking fostered by the typical American school systems.
