I've got a bad harddrive I pulled out of my 4G iPod. It's replacement is coming in the mail, but I've got this one sitting here doing nothing. Is there any downside to opening it up to look at the insides?

Edit: This may be a moot post, because as it turns out, the screwdriver I have isn't small enough for these screws...

I would think that Apple may want the old drive back when you get the new one. I'm pretty sure I've seen it before where a company wants the defective part for the replacement, just to make sure you're not scamming them.

You might be able to use a knife to get at those small screws. If you can find a way to power it up while it's disassembled it's neat to watch the drive head zip from place to place.

a simple 9 volt battery with some wire should be able to move the heads

HDs are assembled in clean rooms because dust can actually damage the heads. Once you open it, you could be severely degrading what's left of its life.

But I'm just guessing.

No delusions about trying to fix it or anything. The Drive is D E D, dead. It's not coming back to life. I've got a replacement on the way. Opening it is just a matter of saying 'Hey, it might be cool to see the inside of this thing...'
