I thought you were going to ask the right one or the left one....I'm fond of the right one. I have my right hand on it with a beer in the left.

I've given up on booze, too.

It hasn't given up on me, though.

Are we choosing the one to give up or the one to keep?

Either I've had too much alcohol or too much internet.

I'd give up the internet. The internet doesn't make parties more fun, and it doesn't taste good either.

A better poll would have been, "Which would you rather give up all internet access or masturbation?"

Well, yet another thing the "Rails" have in common. (What was that other thing again...? )

I actually quit drinking a few weeks ago. I even spent lunch at a bar today and I thought it would be weird, but it was a non-issue.

Anyone want to buy a two tower homebrew kegerator set up? I might keep it for sodas... I'll let you people know later.

Drinking. I like the occasional drink or two, and even a few more if there is a good reason, but its not an every night sort of thing. Plus if I'm not drinking, and my female friends are.... well... they'll need a DD for the drive home at least.

I don't drink at all. To me this is like asking to choose between getting shot and getting free money...

Okay, maybe not that extreme.

Here's a variation on the question: Which would be better for you to give up? Looking at all the multi-thousand posters, most of us would probably be better off giving up the internet than drinking, unless you have a problem with alcoholism.

Well if he started drinking at 14 that could have inhibited his brain development, which would explain some of these threads...

Oh yeah, I don't drink (yet), so I suppose that would be easier to give up.

No wonder you don't drink often, cause you're not even drinking real beer.

I can't recall the last time a drank a mass-marketed cheap domestic beer is. I live around the corner from a kick ass brewery and within a couple hours drive of about a dozen more.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Just remembered something humorous.

When I was down in San Diego a couple of weeks ago, I was talking to a friend of mine about beer. I named off a couple dozen and he asked me "You must like that expensive imported beer."

I laughed really hard and told him almost half of the list was a block from my house. It doesn't get more domestic than that.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

Let’s see.

The Internet provides me with lots of entertainment, whiling-away-time time, and of course porn.

All forms, shapes, and (re)incarnations of alcohol taste vile and disgusting, and make me feel like cutting out my tongue.

I think I’d drop the alcohol (that I wouldn’t even dream of drinking as it is now) and keep my Internets.

I thought you were a beer affiniado? What gives?

I've stopped drinking a couple of times in my life, for a couple of months at the time. Mostly to make sure that I could. But red wine and good beer are always calling me back. And then there are the health benefits.

I am contemplating a no alcohol lent this year. Contemplating.

I use the Internet about a dozen times a day. I have a beer a few times a week.

Definitely would lose the Internet. I enjoy the beer more.

I thought it was Decided (by the Smart People) a few months ago that there was really no proof one way or the other as to whether that glass of red wine had any health benefits at all...

Apparently that's not the case. A recent double blind study in Scandinavia (don't ask me for a link, I read it in the Globe, our local daily paper) did indeed find that regular moderate alcohol consumption lowers the risk of heart disease quite dramatically.

There was also a study (I can probably get a link from a friend if necessary) that compared drinking habits to overall mortality. There was a definite and strong trend showing that your mortality decreases as you drink more, up to about two drinks per day. At three drinks or so you break even. After that further drinking increases your mortality.

Well, I can't do my work effectively without the Internet, which means I wouldn't get paid.
While my work without alcohol would be inferior, it would still be good enough to get paid.
Therefore, if given a choice, I would have to give up the alcohol.

If I had to choose between giving up alcohol or giving up non-work-related Internet activity, that would be a closer call. If I weren't posting on teh 'NN, I'd have more time to drink!
