Is there a way to change the default startup sound for the ding to some sound clip I choose?

Thanks

Go to system preferences, then network, then configure, then proxies, and the box is on the bottom. You're welcome.

There's lots of funny things you could have told him to do, but having him turn on PASV isn't registerting...

PorscheTrev here's the real answer: No it's not possible to change the Mac's startup 'Ding', as it is contained within the computers firmware not within the OS.

The 'Ding' we have at the moment has been with us since the introduction of the AV Quadra's way back in the early 90's (I think, with a minor change with the intro of the PPC chips).

The startup chime has definitely evolved. There are samples of the sounds for the all the models found in Mactracker. Apple should have changed it a bit for the Mactels.

Well since it's been changed for different models of computer it should probably be in a hardware specific forum. And even if you install Linux on your machine it'll still sound, so I'm not sure it has anything to do with OS X.

Game not over?

but the process is the same regardless of hardware - the process is managed by the OS.

So I say again, OS X forum.

The "ding" is held in the system's firmware (either OpenFirmware on PPC or EFI on Intel). There is no way to change it through OS X or any other OS installed on the computer, as it is completely OS-independent. Wipe your hard drive (or remove it altogether) and the sound remains the same.

And I agree that it could have used a little bit of a change for the Intel Macs.

Yes it's a hardware sound. The last update was when Macs started getting PCI card slots. Then the pitch went deeper. It has nothing to do with software, as stated previously. If will do it without any software installed on your Mac. If you feel like hacking firmware, you can probably change it somehow.

firmware is still lines of code, but deeper in hardware

if the change process is firmware, but the process is the same firmware process for all macs, then it's not specific to the mac model.

NO. For God's sake, firmware is NOT SOFTWARE. Ever heard of firmware hacking? It's possible. But it IS NOT OS X RELATED. When Apple released PCI based Macs with new firmware, they changed the startup sound. It hasn't been changed yet. It's been the same since then. You could have OS 8.1 on a non-PCI based Mac and have the old sound, or OS 8.1 on a PCI-base Mac and have the new sound. You ARE right in that it isn't Mac model specific as in iMac or Power Mac.

firmware is lines of code written by overweight nerds on caffeine highs. It is not hardware specific, so it doesn't go in any model-specific forum. OS X is the best place for it

By that logic, if it doesn't have anything to do with hardware, and we've already established that it has nothing to do with OS X, shouldn't it be in, uh, the Lounge?

no, because the lounge isn't the place to handle technical stuff. We all know that. Experienced members just post tech questions here because they are too lazy and impatient to post elsewhere.

The Lounge is where all topics that don't fit into any other forum go. The closest fit for this topic is the Mac Modification forum, where it would probably be acceptable (although that's more for physical hardware hacks). Otherwise, the Lounge it is.

At blasefemie: So now you're dissing people who make Macs and put their sweat and blood into making them work. Cool. And since you're so experienced, being a member for only 1 month, I know you are absolutely the final authority about where threads should go. By the way, your user name is quite appropriate.

do not mistake my join date with my time on the boards. That would be a mistake.

And the lounge is not the catch-all for miscellaneous Mac tech questions. It's the catch-all for social stuff.

a mod to clarify the best place to have posted this thread - but a mod who is willing to not take sides because his decision will set precedent for future lounge posts

It *IS* hardware specific, because different Macs have different firmware.

It has nothing to do with the lounge, and the startup sound has nothing to do with a particular mac model

Just think about what you type before you type it. You're life will improve. I'd like to see you make a Mac Pro from scratch and write all of the code for it.
